Space Javelin

Welcome to a weird episode -- even by our standards, cadets! Cap'n Mike had to deal with some lower-deck nonsense, leaving Cap'n Charles to handle the second half of the show alone! That said, they bring you (as usual) all the news you need to know from the world of tech ... with few tips on how to deal with planet Earth these days. Topics include some great t-shirts, tv shows, and movies to celebrate pride, tackle racism, and give us all hope -- along with a Norwegian repair saga, and an actual Mac vs PC fair comparison (try not to faint). All this and much more, so wear your colors and strut your stuff ... they're letting you out of class early!

The ship hasn't been able to dock into port for nearly three months, cadets, and it's starting to show on both your command crew and the tech universe they cover! Adobe and Edison let really dumb bugs slip by, iOS apparently has so many bugs that hack collectors won't pay for them anymore, Apple settles some lawsuits and faces some threats, Apple TV+ gets busy (in the figurative sense of the term), Google's Chrome spots an incredibly obvious problem, and Sprint has ceased to be! It's expired, and gone to meet its maker! It's rung down the curtain, and joined the Choir Invisible! This ... is an ex-carrier!

All this and so much more — from a roundup of some startingly-likely rumors to a pair of stories from the wild west, from insider trading to fresh new accessories! Take a break from posting short viddy clips on antisocial media, cadets, and have a listen ... you'll be back to work in a giphy!

Some Apple Stores are re-opening on far-flung spaceports, cadets, but to quote David Bowie, there's gonna be some ch-ch-ch-ch-changes in the way they do business! New AirPods and an Apple TV may be waiting in the wings, your iPhone just got even more useful in an emergency, the Apple TV app has some new toys to play with, Microsoft repaves its Surface, Samsung needs your bank account, Wink tries to hold your smarthome hostage, and Warner Brothers unleashes Scooby-Doo (you see what we did there)! Helmets on, cadets ... your reality may be getting kinda augmented!

Special guest Peter Cohen (now our Senior "helping Mike avoid the quarterly financials report" Correspondent) and Cap'n Charles take apart the fiscal Q2 numbers from Apple, which are pretty far from terrible; pore over the renamed "Exposure Notification" as part of the fight against COVID-19, and ponder the (too soon?) planned re-opening of some Apple Stores and how this will be different

Peter also cranks it up to 11 for a screed on the sordid state of non-casual Mac gaming, the crew swoon over some cool iPhone SE features and puzzle over a missing one, and somehow manage to track down an actual Apple Car for sale (at exactly the price you'd think it would cost you). It's a tricky time to be isolated in our little ship, cadets, but cover your ears: like Tesla's Elon Musk, Peter gets a little bit loud when he's on a hot topic!

Co-cap'n Mike is away, cadets, so the show features not only regular guest co-host William Gallagher of AppleInsider.com, but also an interview with audio software maker Paul Kafasis of Rogue Amoeba. The crew take a look at a big haul of new rumors (and scoff at some of them), check out how the iPad and iPhone are doing sales-wise, praise some companies and ding others, bemoan the continued skullduggery of Amazon and Facebook, and despair of Huawei ever admitting they steal intellectual property.

All this and some bold new frontiers for Apple Music (on Samsung TVs) and HomeKit (on Sony TVs), along with an unwarranted attack of silly 90s web brands buying each other. Set the controls for a trip down memory lane, cadets ... we're gonna let the music play down at Fraggle Rock!

The concept of a 4-inch screen on an iPhone is dead, but the iPhone SE name lives on in a sweet iPhone 8-like package, cadets, so dry your tears and pony up $400 to get one, and while you're at it -- maybe you can stretch that extended-duty stimulus check to pick up that sweet new iPad Pro Magic Keyboard -- but if you can't, Capn's Mike and Charles still have you covered! There's also some HomeKit news, a new streaming service soft-launching, a new AMD card for your eGPU if you have one, and some great resources if you're if your under quarter-tine.

All this and a dumb lawsuit actually gets stopped dead in its tracks, TikTok is the Zoom of social media security, Foxconn in Wisconsin continues to be a tax dollars-stealing scam, the Apple-Google alliance gets flack from privacy advocates, and Charles breaks out the beep button as Mike goes off about idiots. All this and some bad news, cadets -- once you hear about the price for wheels for the Mac Pro, you're gonna know you can never afford Apple's whole car!

The space plague quarantine continues, cadets, but it's starting to make strange bedfellows! Google and Apple are working on projects together, more data comes pouring in from sickbay, Apple throws a little of its money around to help ease some suffering, HBO relents, teens love the iPhone (still), and we point you to yet more free and low-cost goodies to help pass the time in your quarters. LG is updating its old and new TVs, stupid lawsuits never take a day off, and watch out for scam texts or emails from COVID-19 princes promising you a check if you'll just hand them your info! Grab your astro-rations and chow down, cadets -- stress-eating is a thing, and there's some cosmic turbulence ahead!

This week, co-Capn's Mike and Charles celebrate the birthdays of Apple and iPad, and offer up a bucket of free and cheap resources to help you cope, cadets (including Sirius XM, Curiosity Stream, your library's resources, Acorn TV and more). As a reminder, April 1 was also Subscription Review Day on the ship, so be sure to see if you're still paying for something you're no longer using! The crew also dig into the latest info on the upcoming "low cost" (relatively) iPhone (now called the SE 2020), which may be coming ... soon! All this, and our new official "hold music" from Mort Gerston!

There's also a big security bullet Apple just dodged, an acquisition of terrific weather app Dark Sky, a deal with Amazon that is great news for Prime Video users (and hopefully others soon), and more good news for Apple Music (have you tried it?). In non-Apple news, John Legere steps down as T-Merger CEO, Zoom continues to implode from either incompetence or malfeasance, Facebook tells Zoom to hold its beer in the "corporate misbehavior" sweepstakes, Tile whines, Apple self-owns a couple of times, and Apple Card holders and Audio Hijack users get a nice surprise! All this and more in even less time than usual, cadets, so be sure to don your news-compression safety gear (and pants) for this week's exciting episode!
