A client of mine used to think career change was a solo mission.

I notice something interesting when I talk to public sector leaders about investing in themselves.

They’ll spend thousands on a degree and professional qualifications without blinking. They’ll invest their time in training courses their employer sends them on.

But when it comes to investing in something that helps them figure out what they want next in their career and life, and how to make that happen, suddenly they pause. 

And I think I know why.

Because degrees and certificates are tangible. You can put them on your CV. You can show them as proof that you’ve learned something.

But…

• Clarity about your values
• Knowing what actually matters most to you
• Confidence in your decisions
• A sense of agency over your career and life

I want to tell you about Chris. Chris was 46 years old. He’d built an impressive career as a government lawyer. 

Worked his way up to being one of the respected voices in his ministry. Smart, competent, well-paid. By most measures, he’d made it.

But when we talked, he told me something in a whisper, like it was shameful: He’d love to become a teacher.

A few years ago, I joined a gym. I was convinced that having access to ALL the equipment, all the classes, and all the expertise I could possibly need would transform my fitness. But I still had to show up. The gym wouldn't do the workout for me.

These days, I use an online training course. For this stage of my life - with a child, work, volunteering and everything else that comes with that - it’s a much better fit.

The point is: The training course isn’t inherently better than the gym. It’s only better because it suits me at this point in my life.

I think the same thing is happening right now with AI. Not to mention online courses, workshops, books, and all the other tools available to support career change.

Everyone seems to be asking: “What’s the best tool?”

But is that the right question?
