  • Lesson 40: Advanced English Speaking / Idioms - Phrasal verbs
Nil was barking up the wrong tree when he brought up to his brother, Carl, about investing in another new business with him. Carl was not even close to partnering up again with him. He didn’t put it past his brother to ruin this new business idea as well due to many reasons. Carl believed that Nil’s business ideas are always clear as mud. For that reason, Nil and Carl's previous company went out of business and they were drowning in debt. After two years of minimum payments, they were able to call it even. Carl didn't want to mess things up again since he already buried the hatchet and most of the things we're starting to work out between both of them. Carl advised Nil that rather than chasing rainbows and believing that a business can be built on its own, Nil should at least conduct market research, write a business plan, compile a financial plan, and set up a legal company before anything else. He assured him that building the right foundation can guarantee the success of a business.

My hubby and I hit a snag with our travel plans due to the unexpected weather that happened in Dallas, TX. We were in a bind because our flight was canceled and our cruise departed the very next day in the afternoon. I lost my temper since I already warned him that I have heard of a storm that was coming to our region and that we needed to cancel our trip right on time so we could get our money refunded. Since he wasn’t all ears as usual and he didn’t take me seriously, our tickets were already footing the bill and our money went down the drain. I honestly sometimes couldn’t put up with him especially when he doesn’t listen to the things that make me anxious. I would even be put off by him and be accused that I made stories up for my own benefit or for whatever reason. I don’t know what to do anymore.

Have you ever thought about what the major positive emotions are and what the major negative emotions are? Napoleon Hill brought these emotions to light by identifying them in his book. According to him, human beings need to get to the point where they can identify and understand their emotions and feelings. Once they can do so, they can draw upon the positives and avoid the negatives. The seven major positive emotions are desire, faith, love, sex, enthusiasm, romance, and hope. The seven major negative emotions are fear, jealousy, hatred, revenge, greed, superstition, and anger. Do you think that it is a good idea to know this list of emotions by heart so we can refer to or rely on them when needed? It can be a great tool where we can track ourselves and be fully aware of what we lack or what our strengths are. For instance, after a year of keeping up at monitoring oneself, someone may realize that he can easily feel the fear but he would never see himself as a greedy one. This way, he can put more effort into improving his weakness which is “fear” rather than anything else. The whole point is identifying or knowing what one’s emotions are and to bend over backward to be the better version of oneself. We are all looking up to a bright future. For this reason, we ensure to give it our all so no regrets would take place.

Two weeks ago, Nick was planning to surprise Molly on her birthday. He booked a hotel room and bought an engagement ring. Molly has been waiting for her boyfriend to propose since forever. He covered Molly’s eyes and led her all the way down to their hotel room. Even though she knew that today was her birthday and that Nick was trying to make her day, she wasn’t that happy. He must watch out. Things weren’t as he set up and planned for. Nick removed the scarf from her eyes, kneeled down, opened the ring box, and asked Molly to marry him. Molly didn’t respond back. She didn’t say I do. Instead, she had a change of heart. She didn’t want him anymore. Molly is the type of person that always chooses to compromise things. She would always settle for what her boyfriend wants. She thought that Nick was a catch. But unfortunately, Nick was rarely appreciative of her sacrifices. He made her feel unappreciated, unworthy, and plagued by regret. But not this time. She didn’t want to be screwed up again. She finally got it off her chest and told him how she felt about this relationship. She went against the grain and she refused to get hitched to the one who stayed with her for 8 years and who she had begged to marry for 5 years.

Liam and his best buddy were in high school when they started up a plan and thought ahead about becoming doctors in the future. There were like birds of a feather flocking together. They had the same way of thinking. They are always on the same wavelength when it comes to planning for the future. Even though they knew that enrolling in medical school was tough, they were in it for the long haul. They were decisive because they were dedicated enough to serve their community and people in need in the medical field. However, they also thought up how they were going to graduate from a well-known medical school without drowning in thousands of dollars in student debt. They wished they could afford to attend Stanford University but everyone knew that Stanford would be a rip-off. But that didn’t cause them to change their minds about pursuing this career. They believed that there was another way to be debt-free and still be able to be a medical practitioner. Attending a federally funded medical school was one of the solutions. They wouldn’t mind committing years of active-duty if they did not just get to graduate but also earn an annual income during their school years. They turned this situation into something that benefited them, and it definitely worked out.

While John was waiting at the ice cream shop for his freebie with his friends, Andrea showed up. Without warning, Andrea screamed and shouted at John to get his paws off of her body. She literally put him on edge. John was shocked and started to see red. He was livid. What made things even worse was when his best friend told him that he should stop trying to put the move on her. John wasn’t thinking straight. He was just furious at how this cougar had it in her to cause a scene even though he had his lips sealed about her. She really got the nerve to pass the buck when she has been the one trying to make a move on him since forever. He wasn’t able to cool off easily. There was only one way he could get her out of his life and that was to blurt out the truth in front of everyone. He yelled at her and pointed out that she has been stalking him and making scenes that led up to this mess. He kicked her out of the group and asked her to stay out of his personal life. When she left, he felt so relieved. He hoped that he would never see her again.

Two people were disguised and waiting inside their big black truck in front of an apartment and kept an eye on a red sedan car for two hours. A lady and little boy hopped into the red car and pulled out of their garage. Someone had sent the big guns to follow them. When the lady took the highway heading to her son's doctor appointment, the two men got into gear. They were driving like road hogs behind her. The lady noticed that this shady car was following her. Her heart was pounding really fast. She locked up the car. She wasn't able to get a grip. She was actually scared to death. She put one hand on the steering wheel speeding up as fast as she could while she held her son’s hand with the other. She knew what was happening. She knew that these could be her last moments with her son. The black truck cut her off and had her car bashed beyond recognition. The criminals got down and went toward the red car. One of them raised his blade while the other one had cuffs in his hands. Neither the mother nor the son was able to fight back because they lost their consciousness. The little boy was pulled out from the car and was taken with his hands cuffed. The mother was left in her seat bleeding to death. The son was kidnapped. It was a tragedy because the son had nothing to do with the death of a mafia member that happened many moons ago.

Bianca and her team had to get with it asap because things were going out of control. She cut to the chase, called in the team, and asked them to stay for the night in order to fix the things that had been falling through the cracks for the past year. She told them that they couldn’t bury their head in the sand now. They must do something tonight before things become a can of worms. The team got down to work. The security team sorted the employees by ID to trace back who was in the crime scene during the past months by using their security system monitor. The IT team got the back of the security team by removing any glitches or crashes that may occur in any system overload circumstances. The accountant team scrutinized the bills and the damages that the company had been subjected to. Bianca wanted so bad to find out who was the reason behind jeopardizing her business. She was determined to crack down on the people that were behind all this madness!
