I live in northeast Ohio on a small twelve acre farm with two ponies, a few hens, a barn cat, two house cats, two old ring-necked African doves, a canary named Pavarotti, and my collie, Maggie. Although I’ve traveled to at least forty states and overseas five times, I’ve never lived further than eight miles from the house where I grew up. My roots are in Trumbull County going back to great-great grandparents.

I married rather young and had four children; two boys and two girls. A year after the death of my oldest son from cancer at age eighteen, I entered Kent State University as a non-traditional student majoring in elementary education. I loved the world of higher learning and took many more classes than needed for my degree, mostly in literature and writing.

After graduating, I taught third grade in Hiram, Ohio. I loved teaching this age level. They’re such fun at this age. While teaching, I pursued a Masters in English and also started writing The Blue Rose, the first in my Catherine Jewell Mystery series. I taught twenty years and then retired so I would have more time for writing and other activities I enjoy.

​I belong to Sisters in Crime, a NE Ohio chapter of SinC, the Guppies, an online chapter of SinC, a Guppy critique group, several short mystery online groups, a local writers group, two book clubs and Facebook. Mystery Conferences I’ve attended are Malice Domestic, Love is Murder, New England Crime Bake, Bouchercon and Seascape, a mystery writers retreat.

Other interests of mine are gardening, music, plays, camping (including nine years of backpacking) daily walks in the woods, and just about anything connected with nature and I especially love reading. I can’t imagine a life without books.

Sandy Smith grew up on a farm with a tremendously large garden. She maintains that if you can’t taste the soil on a carrot, it’s not fresh enough. Although she now lives with her husband, children, and three cats in the city, she still manages to grow fruit and vegetables on their lot, as well as tend to three egg-laying and friendly hens. Someday, she hopes to add bees to the collection.

Ms. Smith is a member of ALLi (The Alliance of Independent Authors) and of her local seed bank. She gardens and writes at her home in the beautiful and green Pacific Northwest.

After graduating from High School in Gresham, OR he attended BYU-ID and received his Associates Degree in Pre-Med. From there he returned to Portland, OR and attended Portland State University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology/Pre-Med before changing his career track to Architecture.

He completed his second Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture at Portland State University before going on to achieve his Master of Architecture Degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT.

After his graduation he and his wife moved to the Phoenix Arizona area where they adopted four children over the next eight years.

Nicholas currently lives in the Salt Lake City area where he is an Associate member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
