Do Customers only Want the Flat Part of the Curve?
            Abstract

Kirk and Fred discussing the classic bathtub curve used in reliability engineering to define the life cycle of electronics and systems.

            Key Points

Join Kirk and Fred as they discuss customer reliability expectations and what section of the bathtub curve is flat

            Topics include:

            • Infant mortality is the definition of the bathtub curve for the early failures and the most costly for any company producing a new product
            • Kirk mentions a $5.00 LED photovoltaic cell outdoor light lasting many years outdoor in Colorado without failure illustrating that cheap doesn’t mean unreliable
            • Customers don’t really care about the bathtub curve, just that the product does not fail.
            • Reliability issues may also be from other packaging, instructions on assembly or how to use, and companies may or may not include these in the failure rates.

              How Many Samples?
              Abstract

Kirk and Fred discussing the challenge of getting samples and the conclusions that can be drawn from testing and analyzing a low number of samples

              Key Points

Join Kirk and Fred as they discuss how to get the most reliability analysis out of just a few samples of a new product and the problem Fred has had with his microphone interface box he uses for podcasting.

              Topics include:

              • Before doing any testing, review of field failures in predecessor products and making sure those causes are eliminated.
              • Planning and then carrying out a stress test to find weaknesses and compare operational limits.
              • Monitoring the parametric shifts of the outputs during the HALT evaluation can also give insight into the manufacturing consistency

                    Abstract

Adam and Fred discussing the Intent and Delivery Anchor method

                    Key Points

Join Adam and Fred as they discuss the Intent and Delivery Anchor method

                    Topics include:

                    • ‘Anchoring” is a proposed method that ensures the value intended from the application of a test or analysis tool is fully realised.
                    • In too many cases we apply test tools in a “fire and forget” mindset.  We kick them off and then don’t pay any attention until they come back with results.  Often these results are arriving much later than planned and now have a greatly diminished value.
                    • With anchoring we are tracking the progress of the tool in reference to the corresponding program activities.  if the original anchors to program decision or deliverable points no longer matches we can assess the value the tool still has.  Maybe we put it on hold or maybe we increase it’s priority and funding. Depends on what we are now going to get in return for our investment.

                      Key Points

Join Adam and Fred as they discuss a new way to ensure all the product goals guide the program all the time

                      Topics include:

                      • The Bounding Method is a new technique that ensures the program and product goals influence the entire program process
                      • Techniques like this have become more important every day for reliability. Reliability has the longest return on investment of any program investments, time to market, cost point, new features.
                      • Bounding is easy to apply and can be understood and immediately implemented with any program team
