Adam and Jordon Suls discussing how reliability engineers find the reliability engineering profession

    Key Points

Join Adam and Jordon as they discuss how reliability engineers find the reliability engineering profession

One thing all reliability engineers have in common is that we found reliability engineering in an unexpected way.  For most of us we were educated as electrical, mechanical, or software engineers.  At some point in our career we came across reliability, or it came across us.  We became fascinated with it and then we found ourselves in role as full time reliability engineers.  Jordon is in the early part of his career as a reliability engineer while Adam is mid way through his career.  What do they both think about how they got to where they are.

    Abstract

Adam and Kishor Trivedi discussing new ways to model software reliability.

    Key Points

Join Adam and Kishor as they discuss new ways to model software reliability.

There are more parallels between software and hardware reliability.  Software can have wear out failure modes.  The idea of a wear out failure mode is typically eliminated in most software reliability models. Mandelbugs and Bohrbugs are both models that can bring these different approaches to software reliability to quantitative measures.

    • Did RAMS Deliver on this Year's Theme?
Did RAMS Deliver on this Year's Theme?
      Abstract

Chris and Joe Bell from G2OPs talk about systems engineering and how it relates to reliability engineering. Joe and his team focus on Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and was hoping to learn more about reliability and MBSE at the 2020 Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS). Was RAMS successful in helping out Joe? Listen to this podcast to learn more.

      Key Points

Joe Bell from G2OPs works with a lot of Department of Defense (DoD) clients, and historical systems engineering approaches are based on paper, PowerPoint files, Excel spreadsheets and so on. From Joe's perspective, MBSE differs primarily from traditional systems engineering by using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML). Does this work?

      Topics include:

      • SysML is a general-purpose digital modeling language for systems engineering, is open source, and is at least an attempt to be
      • The challenge of working with reliability? There is so much reliability software out there that it makes it difficult to work out how to find the balance between having reliability engineering capability embedded within MBSE through SysML versus a function to export data to be analysed externally. And not a lot of work has been undertaken to work tis out.
      • Does the RAMS MBSE theme permeate across they symposium? No. It could be because the topic is so new, but there weren't a lot of answers regarding incorporating reliability into MBSE or SysML. And of the discussions that were based on MBSE, they were very high level and driven by academia. The granular discussions at the practitioner levels were simply not happening.
      • Links to the DoD. The DoD is looking at embedding MBSE into acquisition contracts, but perhaps don't have all the answers regarding how.' Particularly when it comes to reliability engineering. So this is making it challenging in terms of what do we do next?
      • What would be a good first step? Simple, autogenerating plug-ins (for things like FMEAs) that aren't too simple but are useful and not formulaic. All based on a single source of truth' in a SysML environment. Joe works with the US Navy, and you can't do the same levels of testing that the Army an do ( there are a lot fewer aircraft carriers than tanks). So things like FMEAs are really useful in managing risk.
      • Final thoughts on RAMS and MBSE. Joe pointed out that there were a lot of reliability engineers who (at times) tried to focus on MBSE not a lot of systems engineers working through reliability problems. And the majority of the symposium did not focus on MBSE.

Creating the Reliability Czar in an Organization
        Abstract

Adam and Keith Clark discussing the powerful impact of creating a new role in the organization, The Reliability Czar.

        Key Points

Join Adam and Keith as they discuss the powerful impact of creating a new role in the organization, The Reliability Czar.

Keith commissioned an assessment of their reliability process within product development. It was advised that a role be created that would assist with information transfer between the front lines in reliability and leadership.  This role is often called the “Reliabilty Czar.”  Once this role was created his test and engineering team had a direct path to get critical information to leadership.  Leadership wa also able to inquire about what was happening in test and analysis directly to the people executing it.

        Corner Case Use Cases
        Abstract

Adam and Joe Schwendler discussing how “corner case use” in testing can quickly identify robustness weaknesses and most importantly wear out.

        Key Points

Join Adam and Joe as they discuss how “corner case use” in testing can quickly identify robustness weaknesses and most importantly wear out.

Understanding end of life wear out failure modes is a critical part of the product development program.  It is also one of the more difficult behaviors to characterise because simply, “wear out takes a long time.”  Accelerated Life Tests (ALT) can be used to compress the test time.  The challenge with ALT tests is having a verified acceleration model to work with.  Creating a verified model can be a significant time and engineering resource as well.

Exploring how edge cases can reveal wear out failure modes is a great path to understanding long term product behavior in a compressed time frame.  Joe and his team have used this technique to bring a strong understanding of their products reliability and wear out behaviors early in the design process.

        Abstract

Adam and Jessica discussing how the culture of reliability and maintenance can have a dramatic effect in how production and field issues are resolved.

        Key Points

Join Adam and Jessica as they discuss how the culture of reliability and maintenance can have a dramatic effect in how production and field issues are resolved.

        Topics include:

        • Jessica shares how she saw a dramatic contrast in cultures between two organizations when she changed employers.
        • Bridging the gap between design engineering, reliability engineering, quality engineering, and manufacturing engineering can be a long and difficult path.  It takes time and persistent drive towards a goal of collaboration to be achieved.
        • As a reliability engineer it can fall on your shoulders to bridge these gaps.  A significant portion of the challenge is joining the teams that work from a reactive approach to teams that work in a proactive approach.

            SOR 530 An Interesting Discovery
            Abstract

Kirk discusses a very interesting failure mechanism in a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) design and manufacturing company he briefly worked at and what the detailed failure analysis showed.

            Key Points

Join Kirk as he discusses the cause of a batch of VCOs to fail in time and the discovery of missing gold wires in the encapsulated P/N die of the variable capacitance diode (04×02 sized component)

            Topics include:

            • How Kirk used thermal cycling to stimulate some more of the VCO’s  to failure demonstrating latent to patent defect discovery.
            • Cross-sections of the varactor,  also known as a variable capacitance diode, showed a good die inside the encapsulation but no gold wire.  The photos of the cross-section showed there was gold wire on  the walls of the space the wire had been. This was enough gold along walls of the channel left to the die for the voltage to get to the P/N junction to work temporarily, as a varactor is normally a low current component. When the thin film of gold cracked and caused an open circuit and the VCO failed.
            • Kirks analysis was that a group of varactors on the long SMT tape reels were damage by fast voltage spike, possibly ESD damage, at the supplier or in shipping long before assembled in the VCO.
            • The small company’s owner believed it was caused by a lighting strike that passed through several sensitive test instruments without damaging anything but the VCO under test. It was a absurd conclusion and the company did not survive much longer after that time period.
