  • Fixing Unwarranted Price Variations, The Need for 2nd Opinions, & A Personal Connection Fueling the Passion

Peter Hayes, President & CEO at Healthcare Purchaser Alliance of Maine, is passionate about helping people get safe, high-quality care at an affordable price.

Initially inspired by his work in the retail industry, where costs are known down to the penny, he was baffled how wildly healthcare costs can vary from one facility to the next. One example is arthritis treatment, which can cost $12-15k at the hospital, but only $4k in a physician’s office. Another revelation is that cost doesn’t always correlate to quality care.

Peter has used out of the box thinking and data to give healthcare consumers a predictable way to reduce costs for the high-quality care they need and deserve.

A scary experience with his son years ago has only intensified Peter’s passion, and reinforced his belief in the need to get second opinions to ensure patients get proper care.

Dr. Dalila Lewis has been blazing a trail of positivity, change, and hope since joining the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital as Division Chief of Pediatric Neurology.

When she took the lead at MUSC in August 2020, patients were facing  8-9 month long waits to see a provider, often meeting a new doctor at each appointment due to the medical team’s high-turnover and lack of staff.

Thanks to her hands-on leadership style, her willingness to challenge the status quo, and strong support from the hospital’s administrative leadership, patients are now able to get appointments within a few weeks, they’re able to see the same doctors at their visits, and her team has expanded, reducing burnout and turn over.
