On this week’s episode of the Speech Path Pod I spoke with Eric Johnson who had a laryngectomy approximately 10 months ago. Eric was gracious enough to complete this interview and I’m appreciative for all of the great information shared which will be informative to both clinicians and other listeners who are unfamiliar with this patient population.
In this episode you’ll hear:
-A general description of the procedure and communication options
-Eric share his initial thoughts on the procedure
-Discussion of his initial challenges with communication
-And much more!
As always, thank you for listening and your continued support!

An interview with Aaron Padilla, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S & Dr. Phyllis Palmer, PhD, CCC-SLP discussing:
-Clinician-research partnerships
-Their theoretical BOLUS framework to assist with dysphagia decision making
-Guiding clinical questions
Aaron Padilla is an acute care speech pathologist with Presbyterian Healthcare Services at Rust Medical Center in Rio Rancho New Mexico. He is a board certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders and enjoys bridging the gap between the research lab and clinical world through implementation science. His current research interests include host considerations and risk mitigation.
Phyllis Palmer, PhD, CCC-SLP is an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at University of New Mexico where she currently serves as department chair. Under the umbrella of improving dysphagia management for all New Mexicans and dysphagia education for future clinicians, her lines of research address (a) methodologies to improve clinician education including her interactive textbook “Swallowing Across the Lifespan” and the recent development of a swallow disorders data repository, (b) development and implementation of risk associated with aspiration, and (c) improved understanding of the swallow disorder associated with OPMD, a disease with a high incidence in New Mexico.
