The mind is fickle by nature and very difficult to control. But when the mind of a yogi is in enthralled union with God, it becomes sheltered against the winds of desire. Such a yogi holds the mind steadily under control by the power of devotion.
Slowly, the mind’s attachment toward God will start increasing. And simultaneously, its detachment from the world will also increase. As this happens, it will become easier and easier to meditate. But in the beginning, we must be prepared for the battle involved in disciplining the mind.

One who knows that situations can only impact the body, mind and intellect, but not his self, he remains peaceful in all situations. If something good or bad happens to a person whom we have no connection with, do we feel any joy or sorrow? We do not. That is the kind of understanding a realized meditator has towards his own body, mind and intellect. He does not feel the need to enter the realm of prakriti to change anything. He remains a witness of all these changes.
Shri Krishna urges us to lead a well balanced and regulated life so that our body can support our spiritual endeavors. He says that one who has a well regulated diet, exercise, conduct and sleep is fit to become a meditator. Meditation destroys sorrow when one leads a regulated life.

A yogi who still has desires for the world needs to perform action dedicated to a higher cause. Then existing desires get exhausted. Since the attention is on the higher the action does not rebound as more desire. This is Karma Yoga.
When we perform karma yoga, it leads to the purification of the mind and the ripening of spiritual knowledge. But once the mind has been purified and we advance in Yoga, then we can leave karma yoga and take to karma sanyās. Material activities now serve no purpose and meditation now becomes the means.
The mind now no longer gushes into self-centered activities at the urge of the senses. When we achieve this level of mastery over the mind, we will be considered elevated in Yoga.

Persons who perform karma yoga do all activities in the spirit of humble service to God without any desire whatsoever for rewards. Even though they may be gṛihasthas (living with a family), such persons are true yogis and the real renunciants.
Yoga and sannyasa are stages in the same spiritual path. Yoga is when a bhogi, materialist, has just turned inward and is seeking the higher. He still has worldly desires but has understood the futility of chasing after them. Sannyasa is the advanced state when a spiritual aspirant has gone through yoga and has divested the personality of desires.

Arjuna is still confused about what is better: renunciation of work or work in devotion. Krishna explains that devotional service is better. Since everything belongs to Krishna, nothing is one’s own to renounce. Thus whatever one possesses one should use in Krishna’s service. A person working in such consciousness is renounced. This process, called karma yoga, helps one escape the result of fruitive action entanglement in rebirth.
One, who works in devotion with his mind and senses controlled, is in divine consciousness. Although his senses are engaged with sense objects, he is aloof, situated in peace and happiness.

A devotee of the Lord, constantly engaged in devotional service in Krishna consciousness, perfect in self-realization, very quickly attains liberation in the Supreme. Owing to his complete knowledge in self-realization, he always remains in trance.
In His “Song of God,” Shri Krishna beautifully includes all the genuine paths of spiritual practice, but each time, at the end He qualifies them by stating that success in these paths also requires bhakti.
As you develop spiritually you enjoy life, gain power and use the power for the welfare of all beings.
