Chapter 13 mom to schizophrenic is a never-ending chapter. In this episode I'm talking about my first born and only son, Adam.  The subtle onset of symptoms that I didn't recognize at first and then at 16 years old a complete change overnight. The well-mannered, happy, popular kid was gone and in his place was an angry, unstable, sometimes violent person that I did not recognize. His mental illness has taken the essence out of my son. At 16 he had a psychotic break, they diagnosed him with acute psychosis with paranoia. At 19, they gave him the diagnosis of bipolar. At 20, they gave him the diagnosis of schizophrenia and finally at 24 his diagnosis is schizoaffective. Over the years, getting help for his mental illness hasn't been easy. For the last 10 years he's been in and out of psychiatric hospitals, on several medications, kicked out of Board and Care facilities and now homeless living on the streets.

This is the final episode of the Single Mom series and the continuation from last week's. I picked up right where I left off; I had kicked out my boyfriend for having a secret phone and cheating while I focused all my time on my children and on my career. There were still secrets and lies and eventually we both started dating other people. Sofia's dad had demons to battle, with alcoholism, getting his third DUI and facing possible jail time... losing everything. Meanwhile, I had my sights on buying a rental property and units and needing a down payment. Sofia's dad finally battled the alcoholism and embarked on a new sober life... but is it too little too late to win back his family?

This is a continuation of last week's episode; Single mom part 1: raising teenagers.  In this episode Veronica talks about getting pregnant with a rainbow baby and all the ups and downs that she went through with her boyfriend during the pregnancy and after baby Sofia was born.  This is all still during the recession so finding a job was very hard for both parents, which lead to moving three times in a span of a year-and-a-half. Veronica's son suffered from Mental illness and she found herself, her teenage daughter and her boyfriend also in a depression.  Times were hard, money was tight and the relationship was in turmoil but the light of theirs lives and the joy in their hearts was baby Sofia! And she was worth every minute of the fight. However, alcohol, secrets and cheating brings the relationship to a screeching halt and Veronica ends up right where she started; as a single mom but now with a new baby.

True story of events that took place during 2008 to mid 2009. In this episode I talked about what it took to raise two teenagers during a recession. My college education, licenses and certificates did not help me and so I had to turn to alternative ways of making a living to provide for my children. At times, I had 2 jobs but nothing steady. Divorce, dating, job loss, dancing, strip clubs, pregnancy, mental health and miscarriage… all in an 18 month rollercoaster!

In this episode, I talk about all the different experiences and methods of sleep training, self soothing and potty training.  What I have found is that parenting really is a "learn as you go" and every child is different so my parenting style had to adapt to each child. There are basically 5 sleep training methods; Check and console (also known as the Ferber method), Cry it out (CIO), Chair method, Pick up, put down, hush and pat, and Fading or fade it out (FIO).  I have tried every sleep training (coaching) method and every potty training (coaching) method there is and not one worked twice for more than the one child out of 5.

In this episode, Amanda shares her motherhood journey with postpartum anxiety.  Like most first time mothers, she worried about her baby and felt a little blue at times but nothing to suggest depression, so her symptoms went unreported.   Some symptoms of postpartum anxiety can include: constant worry, a feeling that something bad is going to happen, panic attacks, heart palpitations, sleep and/or eating disturbances, racing thoughts, and shortness of breath.  PPA is not common, its estimated that 17% of moms experience it and often goes untreated for years because they are unaware that this is not "normal mom life".  So is Amanda's story, unaware that she was in the eye of a PPA storm, she lived with this debilitating anxiety for 3 years and now she is speaking out and sharing her story with us to help raise awareness.   Her message: if you are suffering from PPA, you are not alone.  You can find her on her IG @theamanda.marcotte and her website at www.thismomismediocre.com

This is a bonus episode for self care awareness.  I recently had a health scare; I was having chest pains and shortness of breath and I went to the emergency room and suffered a minor heart attack in the form of perimyocarditis. I spent 4 days in the hospital, had every test that they have for your heart.  This is a condition that will take 3 months (at minimum) to recover from.

The negative effects of the vaccines on her fourth child and all the help that she needed during the first 4 years of Emily's life.  {Common characteristics of a high needs baby includes constantly crying, needing extra attention; holding or soothing, irregular or unpredictable sleep or feeding patterns, restlessness, easily overstimulated by noise or movement (preventing parents from taking their baby out), and resistant to swaddling.}
