So we're into the next book in the Young Wizards series, and it has a very different start from the others in the series so far. There's no sense of unity here, and while Nita is stewing over something that I'm not quite getting, Kit starts on a solo adventure by stepping through a portal his dog found. It's all very puzzling.
I want to apologize for over-reading for this episode, because apparently the audiobook is not set up to mirror the chapters as I thought it was. I get a little ways into the third chapter on my recap. Sorry about that, i will do better next week!

Hoo boy this was a creepy one. Eve's story not so much, of course, but Villanelle ends up in the clutches of a man who is really truly awful, and the whole world appreciates that he isn't alive anymore.
Meanwhile, there's a new assassin operating on a whole different wavelength to Villanelle, because she prefers to be practically invisible and not draw any attention whatsoever. I cannot wait to see who she is!

I can't believe this book doesn't end with Clariel turning permanently into the person we know she will become. I'm okay with that, because it's a real subversion of my expectation, but I'm left feeling almost sorrier than I would have been otherwise. Knowing that she gets a reprieve and still winds up as she does somehow makes it worse.

This episode is fascinating to me, as we get to see Nona traveling and coping with being utterly unprepared for being alone in what's essentially the wilderness. She summons some fire when she does not succeed in creating her own, and like always...she overdoes it, just a little bit.
Meanwhile, the Abbess is trying to fucking manage the absolute shit show that Mercy Convent is turning into, and Apple wants to go after Kettle because apparently Kettle is also in huge danger and has run away.
Everything is a mess, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

This episode was full of surprises, and the biggest one is that it's mostly about Rebecca and Josh being disgustingly happy together. I had no idea we were going to turn this corner again, and honestly I see that it's an accurate depiction of how hard it can be to move on, but it's not capturing my interest in this case. The only thing that saves this episode is the introduction of the new and acidic owner of the firm, Nathaniel.

Meanwhile, there's the drama with Paula and her husband, which I'm dreading watching further because I want her to forgive him but even if she does, things will never be the same again. In good news, though, Rebecca manages to prove herself to Paula and they are friends again. YAY.

In these chapters, we get a flashback to the situation that landed Luan Zya in the trouble we now see, and it's both agonizing and fascinating. I can't decide how I feel about this guy; sometimes he seems so thoughtful and kind, and then he will do something like try to risk the lives of innocent sailors on a whim of curiosity.
I have no idea what leads to him being tortured and mutilated, and I'm not excited to find out. :(
