  • Episode 77: The Wolf Man (1941)

Where wolf? There, wolf! Or something like that. It’s the last classic monster movie of Novemboo, and Nicole and Joe have divided opinions on this movie starring Lon Chaney Jr. (Don’t listen to Joe when he talks about him being in things before, that was his dad.) While going through this movie, they touch on topics such as Larry’s creeping, Welsh accents, how this movie stacks up against its Full House hype, and The Phantom of the Opera.

    Warning:

Episode contains spoilers and mentions murder, animal violence, and stalking.

  • Episode 76: Are You Afraid of the Dark? Season 3, Ep. 7

We at Spook! promise not to haunt you forever if you promise to listen to this episode! Season 3 of AYAOTD is drawing to a close, at least according to Paramount+, and the order continues to be all out of whack. But that doesn’t stop Joe and Nicole from enjoying this surprisingly poignant episode and discussing the parallels between its mean Eastern European apartment manager and the one from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies.

    Warning:

Episode contains spoilers and mentions death.

  • Episode 75: Dracula (1931)

It’s our 75th episode! But that’s only the second spookiest “Count” in this edition of Spook!. Nicole and Joe tackle the movie that started the Hollywood horror genre, and see how it compares to Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyr. They get reasonably side-tracked talking about The Music Man and why this time around, they’re kind of rooting for Dracula.

    Warning:

Episode contains spoilers and mentions murder and child murder.

  • Episode 74: Are You Afraid of the Dark? Season 3, Ep. 6

This episode of AYAOTD is clearly no walk in the park (sorry). Joe and Nicole cover this surprisingly gruesome tale that left a few too many questions unanswered. Hopefully it can be made up for by helping Joe and Nicole overcome their fear of Mouse Rats.

    Warning:

Episode contains spoilers and mentions child endangerment and gore.

  • Episode 73: Frankenstein (1931)

It’s alive! Novemboo continues with another one of the most iconic films of all time, based on one of horror’s seminal novels. Frankenstein needs little introduction, but Joe and Nicole walk through it, anyway, and discuss brain folds and psychopathy, changes big and small from Mary Shelley’s novel, and talk about how this movie’s iconic monster gets kind of a bad break.

    Warning:

Episode contains spoilers and mentions murder, child death, and gore.

  • Episode 72: Are You Afraid of the Dark? Season 3, Ep. 5

Feeling an unexplained sense of existential dread lately? Don’t worry! Spook! is here to replace that gnawing feeling with a much more placeable one: fear of drowning! Yes, it’s a particularly heavy episode of AYAOTD, and a bittersweet one, too, as it’s the last we will see of Kristen and David. Luckily, they go out on a high note, with this Stephen King-esque Tale of the Shiny Red Bicycle delivering scares and pathos in equal measure.

    Warning:

Episode contains spoilers and mentions accidental drowning and child death.

It’s the beginning of Novemboo here on Spook!! And for our first classic Universal monster movie, Nicole and Joe watch the iconic Creature from the Black Lagoon, perhaps best known for being a movie poster in other movies. Joe and Nicole discuss prehistoric periods, the mandatory romance arc, and bringing back the woolly mammoth.

Happy Almost Halloween! It’s a favorite holiday for Spook!, so naturally, it’s time to dig into the origins of everyone’s favorite spooky day! From an ancient Celtic feast to a modern commercial day of candy and tricks, Joe and Nicole do their best to go over where this special day originated. Along the way they discuss favorite costumes, Stingy Jack, and some antiquated matchmaking practices.

  • Episode 68: Are You Afraid of the Dark? Season 3, Ep. 4

It’s a tale as old as time: A group of kids drive by a haunted mansion only to have their car break down and be stalked by ghosts. Such is the case for “The Tale of the Whispering Walls”, an episode that bears a striking resemblance to another AYAOTD episode. Joe and Nicole discuss 90’s fashion, full moon on a leap year, and My Chemical Romance.
