No ma’am listen to me,” Arjun Sondhi said, trying his best English dialect and, almost slamming his fist down on the desk he continued, “You have to listen to me. Me. Yes, me!”He felt a warm hand on his shoulder and knew it was his boss Vijay ready to tell him to go home for the day. He hadn’t had any sales in a few days since the last time the ScammerKiller on YouTube had taken all of the money he siphoned from a 68 year old woman’s account in the States.“Arjun, calm down. You have one more call and then I want you to go home.”Arjun looked up at his boss, almost thankful he was allowed one more call. “I am irritated, sir. These YouTubers are killing us.”“Do not worry, son. They are a small amount compared to the money we make here. There are so many more people who do not even go to YouTube. They will never know.”“I’d like to know my future here, Sir. Is it all worth it?”“You can find out. Go out there on the streets and find another job. Nothing will pay you as much as we do here.”“Yes, Sir.” Arjun said as he sat back down and put the headphones on. One more call to make my goal then I will take the day off.As Vijay walked off and Arjun turned his workstation software back on, the phone began ringing again. “Hello, this is the technical support department. My name is Mike. How may I help you?”The voice of an elderly American woman echoed into his ear. Arjun smiled as she said her name and the problem at hand. He enjoyed speaking to the elderly, especially the women, they were the most gullible.“Hello, ma’am. You say your phone is not working?”“I said, young man, that a message popped up on my screen that said I had a virus. How can my phone get a virus? It can’t get a cold. It said my data was in danger.”“Yes, yes ma’am. That means you have a virus on your phone and we can take care of that for you.”“Are you a doctor? I don’t understand. Can I get this virus?” I can’t get sick, I have a bad heart.”Arjun hit the mute button to hide his snicker. At this point, he wanted to play some games with the old broad. How dumb could people be? The older boomers like this were his favorites. They came into the computer game late and knew nothing about computer viruses, backdoors, trojans, and especially not remote access software. They had the most money saved over the years with grandiose retirement accounts–at least compared to what he could make in India in a normal job, but this job paid him well. He was able to afford much more than his friends and family and he didn’t care. Why should he?“Ma’am, I am a computer doctor. I can help you. The virus will be gone and you will be safe from the hacker seeing you through your camera or taking all of your data on your hard drive.”“They can see me at night?” she cried out, sounding ashamed.“Yes, ma’am, if your computer or phone has a camera they can see and hear everything you do. That is why we must fix this now. Right now.”“I only have twelve hundred dollars left in my account for Christmas. I don’t have any more than that. It is my rent and utilities and presents for my grandchildren.”“Ma’am, right now I am only asking for $149. It is a special for the holiday. Normally it is $200 but for you ma’am, it is only $149 because you have such a pretty voice.”“Aren’t you sweet? Ok. What do you want? Visa or Mastercard?”“Visa debit card, ma’am, please. I can only use a debit card.” Arjun began to write down the numbers as she read them off. He enjoyed the elderly calls because they were so lucrative, but they took forever to complete. He looked at the clock, this call was taking so long and he was going to get money taken from him if he didn’t close the call soon or make more money off of it.“Ma’am, can you please hurry, I have to get home to my children.” He lied. He always lied just to get the money and these people were suckers for a good dad.“Son, I cannot see so well these days even with my reading glasses.”He slowly entered the numbers into the computer as she read them then hit return. A huge red dialog box popped up stating the number was not accurate. Seeing that box infuriated him as it meant he was either speaking to someone who knew he was a scammer or the call was going to be exceptionally long. “Ma’am, that number does not go through. Can you read it again, please?”“I can hear the irritation in your voice young man. Please don’t be impatient with me, I’m going as fast as I can.”“You have to go faster ma’am, or the virus will eat up your phone and those pictures you have of your grandkids,” he said, wiping the sweat from his brow.“Oh no. I can’t lose those. They are precious to me. You can’t see them can you? They are such beautiful children.”“No ma’am, I cannot see them. What is the expiration date on the card?”“8/25/2025.”“Yes, ma’am. OK Ma’m that went through.”“It did! I see a message on my cell phone but why did it say you charged five hundred?”“I did not ma’am. I charged you $149.”“Did you steal my money? You charged so much!” she said as she started to cry. That was my late husband Arnold’s money. He only left me so much. I miss him so. I want to speak to your boss.Arjun smiled. He knew this call was about to get a lot easier. “Yes, ma’am. I will get him.” And then he hung up.A moment later he called back, this time disguising his voice with a deeper, more accented tone. ““Hello, Delia? This is Fred from the US Department of Justice Services calling. I understand you just had a call and gave a scammer money.”With her voice meek and cracking, Delia answered, “How do you know that?”“We trace these calls, ma’am.”“Then why do you have an accent like his?”“Ma’am, I am Fred, I was born in India but now I am in Florida. I can help you with this problem but I need you yoututo download this app by clicking on a link. You can trust me, ma’am. With this proof we will get your money back and arrest this criminal. I will message you a link and it will help me take the data needed to put that money back in.”“Oh think, sir.”Arjun sent the text to her phone and she tapped on the link just like all of the fools he trapped. He smiled as he now had full access and control to her phone’s operating system and on seeing which banking app she used, he knew it was going to allow him to transfer a lot of money. He opened the banking app which brought up a facial recognition program and as she was waiting for him to answer and looking into the phone it opened up the screen for him. He marveled at the twenty thousand dollars waiting for his greedy scam to happen. Arjun opened the money transfer tab and the US phone number for his scam account which popped up with the fake info. He then entered 2 0 0 0 0 totalling twenty thousand and hit transfer. Are you sure you want to transfer? The app stated.“Yes,” he said and laughed as he tapped to approve the transaction. As he did, he heard Delia on the other end begin to choke and cry.“That was all I had, what are you doing?” her voice trembled.“Go fuck yourself, ma’am,” he said in this thick Indian accent. “You were the easiest bitch ever!” He laughed and waited for her to answer as he enjoyed the misery of the people he took the money from. Those entitled people in the States! He waited another moment but instead of hearing the sobbing, there was a loud thump and the sound of the phone crashing to the floor. The camera on the phone popped on and he could suddenly see her face on his computer screen through the webcam. Spit dribbled from the corner of her open mouth and her eyes lost their gloss of life as the pupils dilated.Arjun looked closer as he had never seen someone die before. It fascinated him and then he realized that nothing at that point could hurt him. He took a screenshot of her face and saved it to his desktop then continued to pull money from the rest of her accounts and erased all of the data on her phone. They probably wouldn’t notice her for days and by the time they did, all traces of his activity would be gone.Laughing, he signed off and knew that his next check was going to be as fat as the lamb he was about to eat that night. As he drove home, he thought about the dying woman’s face and how her eyes lost their life while she choked into the camera. It wasn’t so bad, he thought. She was at the end of her life anyway and would be in a better place. No one can steal from her now and with that he laughed as he accelerated. After his dinner of lamb and curry, Arjun took a hot bath and went promptly to bed. He was excited to see his deposit the next day and going to bed early would it make it seem to get there faster. Usually, they were minimal but this one would be very big as he had been getting better at his job every day. He was proud that he could take in more money for his family and they didn’t care. His brother and sister were also employed by the company and his ailing parents enjoyed the gifts he bought them. He was too cheap to allow them to move in with him or buy them a nice place, but they made do with what they had.As he placed his head on the pillow before him and began to cl
