Coming back to Sandcastle was not something she wanted to do any time soon, but her mother had passed and now she was the sole owner of her childhood home sitting above the waves of the Pacific. It was a beautiful house where many happy memories were made until that fateful day that will forever haunt her dreams. Now coming back for a second time in a lifetime she wondered if it might be her last. She pulled into the driveway of the home nestled quietly into the shadows of the rocks above the ocean. Her family abode sat above the left side of the Sandcastle beach at the mouth of the Pacific. The beach at the heart of Sandcastle was a beautiful, sandy beach surrounded by the most tormented cliffs. Thousands of years of salty water eroded the sides of the cliffs where rocks and obsidian protruded into the sunlight. In some spots, the seagrass and icicle plants covered the hillside but in others, it was a constant reminder of how dangerous the coast can be. She knew her friend Brian Lam who loved exploring these cliffs had disappeared hunting for treasure in them and they were a constant reminder of his demise. On the cliff across from her home stood the Miller mansion. The Miller family lived in Sandcastle even longer than her own. Mrs. Miller was undoubtedly too old to run her own place now and she wondered who could possibly be keeping up that beautiful home. It was much more of a castle than her own house even though both homes were the pride of the area. She would have to go visit once her family homestead was put up for sale. She parked the car in front of the white pillars and stepped over the stone pathway. She knocked using the large iron ring hanging on the wooden door then shook her head. Who am I knocking for? she thought to herself then used her own house key to enter the large wooden doors. The entryway was tall, at least twenty feet high, and covered both stories of the house. The stairs heading off to the right of the house led to the bedrooms and upstairs bathrooms. The stairs to the left led to the den and the guest rooms plus a guest bathroom. As she shut the heavy doors behind her, the sound of the wind and the crashing waves faded. Despite the comfort of the roof over her head, the house was cold and uninviting. She half expected to smell either gingerbread or banana bread, two of her favorite recipes that her mother would make when she made an appearance. For a brief moment, she thought she could smell the cinnamon and ginger coming from the kitchen but then the cold air wafted in her nose. No, all that greeted her was loneliness. With both of her parents now dead and her immediate family gone, all she knew was despair.Feeling a little fatigued from the drive, she started a fire in the old stone fireplace in the living room adjacent to the entry way. The ceilings weren't as high in the living room as the upstairs floor was overhead. She closed off the entrance with the big oak doors and covered herself in an afghan while sitting in her dad's favorite recliner. She left all of her luggage in the car knowing it would be safe. She needed her rest. Her boss gave her a five week sabbatical to mourn the death of her mother and get the house ready for the market. She wanted to work through the funeral, but they insisted she take the time off as she hadn't had a vacation in over 2 years. But there was good reason for that, it kept her mind off of the worst night of her life.Coming back on the highway from San Franciso one foggy, wet night in February it was unusually cold. The already slick roads were starting to freeze in the 30-degree weather. Her husband, Ricky Reynolds, hadn't anticipated the weather to be so cold and icy. He gathered up their twin girls and begged June to come with them to Sandcastle for his mother's wedding. She reluctantly sat down in the passenger's side of the car and wrapped herself in a thin blanket while the girls cuddled in the backseat. The last time she was in Sandcastle her best friend Brian had disappeared and only the bloody remains of his clothes were found scattered on the beach. She really didn't want to be there to remember. She watched the sheets of ice sloughing off the windshield as the frozen fog attached itself to the glass and melted away by the defroster. Never before had she seen it so cold off the Northern California coastline--at least this close to the Bay Area. The weather was strange, but so was her hometown. Odd things happened there and she was happy to get away. Coming back even just for one day was something she would soon want to forget. As the car turned the corner she felt the ground shake beneath the wheels of the vehicle. Ricky hit the brakes and the car slid toward the side of the mountain and then came to a halt while sliding too close to the cliff. He tried to start the car but it wouldn't turn over. When he opened his door, June's husband realized he was too close to the edge of the cliff to get out of his side so he told June to get out first. She did and waited for him to slide over when the door shut between them. Another rumble of thunder clapped in the distance and then, as she stepped back from the door he swung open she heard the ground moan. A sudden shake of the earth beneath her sent June backward, falling into the street as the car fell into the ocean with her husband and daughters screaming into the night. The ground beneath them gave way and crumbled into the sea.June awoke, sitting upright and crying. For a brief moment, she forgot where she was and reached over for her favorite pillow. Then it hit her. She was back home in that nightmare of a town where bad things happen to everyone--especially those who leave and come back. She stared into the fireplace waiting for her mother to appear and bring her a hot tea or something to comfort her as she did when Ricky and the twins fell to their death.Hearing the silence of the night and the winds pressing into the outside walls of the house brought her to tears. She was truly alone now. The screams of her children faded as she stared into the warm fire. What in the hell was she going to do for five weeks in this God-forsaken town? It was even Valentine's Day and she had no one to spend it with. Her best friend Brian was missing and assumed to be dead. Her whole family was gone, too. She didn't even know where the car and the bodies of her children went. The car was swept out to sea and her husband was tossed onto the rocky cliff. She couldn't even bury her girls. Their coffins were empty at the funeral.Shaking off the past, she made her way into the kitchen and found her mother's favorite tea kettle. As it heated over the gas stove she pulled her favorite cup and some spiced tea from the cabinet. The expiration date was still fresh and she knew that to be true. Her mother always bought a new box when the old expired in hopes that her daughter would return home one day. The tears flowed as she remembered her mother's soft, warm hands holding hers at her family's funeral. It was the last time she saw her mom. She always thought her mother would live forever.A whisk of cold air fluttered around her neck for a moment. She rubbed her fingers across the back of her neck noticing how frigid it suddenly was in the house. The fireplace had enough wood to last through her nap and should have heated up the lower rooms except for the great room and entryway. Shuddering, she pulled the afghan around her shoulders and finished making her tea. She laughed a little as she pulled out frozen banana bread from the freezer. Somehow her mother knew she would be here and knew what to leave behind. It wasn't long before the microwave beeped and June was devouring a delicious piece of her mother's banana bread. She didn't realize how hungry she truly was until she noticed that she ate every crumb on the plate. Licking her lips and fingertips, she washed off the plate and put it in the strainer in the sink then headed off to her room upstairs. As she climbed the stairs, the coldness in the air enveloped her like a veil of darkness. The air became thick and heavy and she trudged up the steps. Closing her eyes, she stopped and pressed her back to the wall. She wanted to just fall down the steps to make the feeling go away. It would be so easy, but she knew it wasn't what she wanted. Something pressed on her arm, pushing her up the stairs. Something? She looked around. There was no one there. She climbed up the stairs to her room which was the first one on the right. All of the rooms were on the right. She had forgotten how big her childhood home was until this moment of emptiness. As she opened the door, the weight lifted and the light from the sun peeking
