This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by some family for a bear hunting conversation. The family guests are his younger cousins Jacob, Josh, and Isaac Mengel, who've recently begun a journey of starting their own bear hunt tradition at their cabin in northern PA. Previously their camp did not have a consistent tradition of hosting a bear hunt, and the times it did turned into solo endeavors. For the last four hunting seasons, they have started their mission to learn how to bear hunt their historic hunting grounds, and how to do it with a group. The guys share their experiences of how they got started, the obstacles along the way, the mess ups, and the successes, including Isaac's first bear harvested from a drive with only five people! This conversation sheds light on perspective from new bear hunters and how they overcame the intimidation factor of hunting a new species in a tough environment.

Image stabilizing binoculars have become more prominent in the hunting space as a result of the Sig Sauer Zulu 6 line of binos entrance into the market a few years ago. In today's episode, Jacob shares the results of his evaluation of the Sig Sauer Zulu 6 image stabilizing binoculars as compared to the Canon IS3 image stabilizing binoculars. Is there value in a non hunting brand like the Canon IS3? How do these 2 models compare beyond the price tag? How do the stabilization features compare? Waterproofing? Weight? Field of view? Eye relief? Exit pupil? Battery life? Warranty? And, of course, image quality? Jacob will share his thoughts on these features and more on today's episode. Thanks for listening!

There’s plenty of “dog talk at its finest” in this episode with Hoosier tree dog enthusiast Darren Allgood. With three squirrel dog world championships under his belt and an affinity for Plotts and Mountain Curs, Steve takes the opportunity to catch up with his guest as he returns home from Plott Days. The result is some great conversation, tailor-made for brindle dog aficionados. The boys discuss Allgood’s background and beginning in an area that has long been famous for producing big-winning coonhounds and curs, many of them from the English Coonhound breed. Several coon hunting icons, of the two and four-legged variety, are discussed at length. This one is for good ole boys that love good hounds and love, even more, to sit and talk about them. For that reason, this one qualifies, without reservation, for the “dog talk at it’s finest” designation. See if you agree!

The purpose of a single bevel blade on a broadhead is to twist as it penetrates as opposed to creating a flat cut plane like a double bevel blade does. As a result, you have a wound channel that doesn't close or re-seal easily, which hopefully translates into better blood trails and better recoveries. In today's episode, Jacob share the results of his evaluation of 2 different single bevel broadheads. Jacob shot the Iron Will 125 and the Toulou 125 through ballistic gel and each through a mature whitetail shoulder blade. He examined the twist rate of each broadhead and penetration. The results of the evaluation were compelling and worth sharing. Thanks for listening!
