It’s that time of year again and it couldn’t come soon enough! Ross decided to come home from catching bears to grace us with his presence. The guys have a few rabbits to chase. Ross and Jason talk about finished dogs starting to slick tree, working through problems and even dog turds. It may be semi-random, but it was fun!

Where did the Leopard Dog come from? That is a question we may never know the answer to. Were Leopard Dogs and Plotts crossed? While opinions differ, today’s author proposes that is exactly what happened. On the quest to make the best bear dogs in the land, there are lots of twist and turns. But to sculpt a masterpiece a sculptor must use a combination of the finest materials and the highest quality of tools. Building a bear dog is no different. It takes the keen eye of the sculptor to seek out the greatest raw material and then work his magic. Did Henry Plott have the same vision in mind for the Plott dogs? Did Henry Plott see the Leopard dogs as a vital piece of the Plott hounds we know and love today? Listen up ladies and gentlemen, class is in session.

Sometimes good things just take time. This week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman is no exception, as this is a slightly longer conversation. Our guest is Cory Gulvas and we dive into the world of traditional archery. Cory's passion has driven him to competition level shooting, solely hunting with a recurve, and even bow building. In that time, Cory has faced nearly any obstacle that a new stickbow shooter could possibly experience. Take notes if you're a noob!
Cory is often approached for advice, and typically finds people struggling with the same things repeatedly. We discuss getting into traditional archery for the correct reasons, choosing the best equipment to start, aiming methods, shot execution, target panic, and much more. If you've been struggling to figure out how to overcome many of these common issues when shooting a trad bow, your questions may be answered in this episode.

While cell cams will continue to evolve in size, picture quality and other specs, the greatest opportunity for differentiation within the market is the evolution of the app that accompanies the cell cam. Cell cam apps are now incorporating artificial intelligence, tagging of specific animals, and greater sorting features. But, what about all the other data that pics provide. That is where the real separation in the product category will happen next. The data collected from your fleet of cell cams will help you create a micro predictive deer movement model based on your property to help you allocated your time more effectively in the field. This is where cell cam apps are going and you should pay close attention to the companies that evolve this space accordingly.

In this episode of the Antler Up Podcast, host Jeremy Dinsmore is joined by The Dialed in Hunter, Josh Kirchner. In this conversation, Josh Kirchner and Jeremy discuss the importance of keeping things simple when it comes to Western hunting. They emphasize avoiding overcomplicating gear choices and focusing on archery fundamentals instead. Josh is a wealth of knowledge and years of experience when it comes to western hunting and backpack hunting. He recently just released his latest book Becoming A Bowhunter: A Complete Beginner’s Guide to Archery Hunting (Becoming a Hunter).
They also highlight the significance of understanding the food sources of animals, from bears, elk and mule deer, and how it can lead to hunting success. The conversation touches on the value of research and preparation, as well as the need to prioritize time in the field.
Overall, the key takeaway is to focus on the essential aspects of hunting and not get caught up in unnecessary complexities. In this conversation, Jeremy and Josh discuss the importance of scouting and e-scouting in hunting. They emphasize the need to plan and gather knowledge about the animals, their behavior, and their habitats before going on a hunt. They also talk about the significance of simplifying the scouting process and focusing on key factors such as elevation, access, and centrally located campsites. Josh shares his tips for e-scouting and highlights the importance of knowing your gear and testing it before heading out. They also discuss the importance of food and water in the backcountry and the need to bring food that you enjoy eating. Overall, the conversation provides valuable insights and advice for hunters heading out West for their first trip.
So, grab your gear, sit back, and join us on this episode as we Antler Up with Josh Kirchner on today's episode of the Antler Up Podcast.

They’re here folks. The hot, sultry, dog days of summer, considered by the ancient Greeks to be connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs and bad luck. Hound hunters will agree with that Hellenistic view, adding mosquitos, poisonous snakes and humidity to the mix as they try to keep a hound in shape or to attend competitions at this time of year.
Steve and Corey touch on track dogs and tree climbers in this episode from the front porch on a dog day afternoon. Steve has some pretty serious views on the subject of climbing trees when training hounds and offers a strong admonishment to those tempted to apply the method to their training regimen in a single word, don’t!
Whether your drink of choice is sweet tea or a mint julep, pour a tall one and enjoy an hour or so with us, rocking to the Summertime blues
