  • The true face of crime
I consider myself somewhat of a superhero, Superman, to be exact. I trawl the streets by day, sniffing out news and helping to set the agenda. By night, moonlight, I like to tell the stories that won’t make it on the news agenda. Crime is rife in South Africa. Ours is said to be the rape capital of the world, although many might argue that our statistics are skewed. Be that as it may, every South African knows someone who has been a victim of crime. Not a unique stretch by the world imagination, I would gather. I have covered multitudes of crime scenes. I have seen the burnt out cadaver of a shack fire victim. That image haunts me to this day. But the Northcliff murders struck a chord with me. It spurned me to seek out the true face of crime.
I covered this particular crime as a journalist. The who: three family members. The what: three bodies found burnt out in a field. The when: on a Sunday night. The why: Money. The where: Johannesburg, South Africa. It was rote journalism. Sensationalist. Utterly meaningless. But then I got to thinking about the people, the human life, behind the crime. Baobulb.org is meant to be a platform for my superhero work (the things I do outside of my 9-5 shift), stories that make my heart skip a beat. Take a listen for the true face of crime.

Shalom listeners! Today we will be looking as the Brazen Laver and how that applies to us in our journey of worship. THE BRAZEN LAVER (REFLECTION) The Brazen Laver was made from the copper mirrors of the women and the whole purpose of a mirror is to reflect an image. The ministry of the laver points us to the Word of God that gives us a true and clear image of ourselves as we are, as God sees us. The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to convict us of sin. Psalm 139:23 Search me, O God and know my heart! Examine me, and know my anxious thoughts, 24 and see if there be any offensive way within me and lead me in the way everlasting. We need to remember that worship is not just about singing but also about reading and studying the Word of God. It is in the Outer Court stage of our worship that we need to reflect and deal with our sin and the issues that are in our lives. We can’t progress to the next stage until we have dealt with our sin as it hinders our worship. How often do we come to a place of worship and we harbour anger, bitterness, jealousy and unforgiveness toward others? In Matthew 6:14 we read that If you forgive other people when they sin against you , your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. This is the time to confess our sins and if necessary, restore relationships with one another. The focus in our worship at this stage is on Yeshua the Lamb of God who takes away our sin. I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive our sins, and purify us from all unrighteousness. QUESTIONS: What is hindering you in your worship? Is there sin that needs to be dealt with? Are you harboring unforgiveness? In summarizing the Outer Court, we have seen that the emphasis is on salvation (The Gate), total surrender to God (The Brazen Altar) and repentance (The Brazen Laver) all of which are necessary for a relationship with God. In our next session we will continue in the Outer Court as we look at “Entering into the Courtyard with Praise”.
