Christians are to expect opposition from the world – and even from the religious – and it is both subtle and head-on. It comes because the world hates God and Jesus to whom we belong and whose name we bear. We should nevertheless continue to testify in the power of the Spirit, and depend on God to strengthen and grow his Church.

In Luke’s account of the Last Supper, Jesus draws parallels with the Exodus and Passover. He identifies three elements: (a) the coming of his kingdom – his gracious rule over human affairs; (b) his death on the cross – the founding event of his kingdom; and (c) a new covenant, replacing the Mosaic covenant, setting out a new relationship between God and the human race. As we participate in the Holy Communion, we acknowledge Christ’s rule over our lives, and reaffirming our willingness to be his disciples.
