Donald explores the idea of atonement. The need for atonement arises from the fact of sin, and God’s wrath (‘implacable hostility’) towards sin which requires a penalty. The basis for atonement is illustrated from the Old Testament Day of Atonement rituals. The Christian ‘Day of Atonement’ is Good Friday, where Christ is both sacrifice and priest, so that he can plead with God in our defence.

This key chapter in the history of Israel speaks of the promise made by our gracious sovereign God to provide a Davidic king to rule God's redeemed people forever - a promise that cannot be broken by death, sin or by any other power. That king is of course Jesus, King David's greater son.

We all probably sail close to the wind in the area of sexual immorality - if not in actions but certainly by our thoughts. This sermon challenges us to purity and encourages us with practical measures we can take to flee from temptation when it appears before us.

David may not have been a perfect husband but when his wife Michal poured scorn on him for worshipping God with such abandon David's reaction can teach us all a lesson on how we approach God in worship. Will challenges us to look at our attitude to wholehearted worship and see if we can become a little bit more like David.
