Human beings are designed to need a king. Adam and Eve experienced God’s loving rule and blessing in Eden but rebelled against God choosing to rule their own lives and forsake his protection – the same is true for all of us. God chose Israel to be his holy nation to once again experience his loving rule and blessing, giving them David, a shepherd-king to represent God. But this situation was limited and partial. The rule of God’s true king, Jesus the Good Shepherd, however, is everlasting and universal.

According to Matthew’s gospel, Jesus is radically pro-child and wants all children to come to him. Children are naturally open to God and must not be hindered from coming to him; they must instead be nurtured and invested in. Unlike the alternatives on offer, children who come to Jesus are blessed both in this life and the next. We must continue investing in the ministry amongst children and young people since it is close to God’s heart, commanded of us, strategically important and fulfilling to be part of.
