St Paul contrasts what we were before we became Christians ('dead, enslaved, condemned') with what we have become in Christ ('alive, created in Christ Jesus to do good works'). The transformation is the outcome of God's grace, 'the gift of God': there is nothing we can contribute to bring it about.

The image of ‘our walk' is used to illustrate how we should be living as Christians; Where and How should we walk? We should be walking in the light by confessing our sins to God who promises to forgive us. By doing so we can have fellowship with him and each other. We should walk as Jesus did in obedience to God and love for him and others.
