צ Tsadhe 137 You are righteous, Lord, and your laws are right. 138 The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy. 139 My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words. 140 Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them. 141 Though I am lowly and despised, I do not forget your precepts. 142 Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true. 143 Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands give me delight. 144 Your statutes are always righteous; give me understanding that I may live. REFLECTIONSWritten by Paul BoggDo we find it difficult to listen to God? Do we trust His Word to be true in our lives? We are living in a challenging time, and as we look around us, there is much to be concerned about - sickness, relationship breakdowns, a feeling of general disorder in society. The Psalmist in these short words has told us that he, too, has had trouble and distress come upon him (in verse 141). The Psalmist is no stranger to feeling lowly and despised (in verse 143). But in the midst of these feelings, the Psalmist recognises that God's Word is true, God's statutes are righteous (or in other words, good), and His law is right (verses 137, 142, 144). And the Psalmist tests God's Word out in his life thoroughly, and so, comes to love it and delight in it. Do we trust God's Word to be true in our lives? We have a further promise given to us in Jesus Christ in 2 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 20: "For no matter how many promises God has made, they are 'Yes' in Christ". If you find yourself not listening to God, or unsure about whether what he promises in His Word is true, good, or right - test it out for yourself today in Christ. Come to the foot of the cross of Christ and ask Him to help you see the promises for what they are, to trust them, and to apply it to your day. And so we ask, just like the Psalmist does in verse 144: "Lord, give me understanding that I may live" ABOUT THE AUTHORPaul and Tina are part of Bossley Park congregation.
