  • Jesus, Israel, and Hamas - Oct 29 - Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost
Israel and Hamas' quest for the land of Palestine springs from a
disagreement about which one is the true offspring of Abraham. But in the Christian
New Testament writers like St. Paul argue that only Jesus is the true Offspring of
Abraham. So whoever wants to inherit the land - whether they be Jew, Muslim, or
Gentile, must do so through union with Jesus, son of Abraham and son of God.

  • The Meaning of Jesus' Death - Oct 22 - Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost
There have been three major interpretations of Jesus' death in the Bible -
his death was substitutionary, his death defeated evil, and his death provides an
example for how we are to serve others self-sacrificially. In this sermon Aaron
explores the biblical foundation of all three and teaches what they mean for how we
understand how God thinks of us and what his plans are for rescuing his creation.

  • Jesus is the New Temple - Oct 15 - Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost
The tabernacle and temple in the Old Testament were the places where God
lived with his people, revealed himself to them, and forgave their sins. Jesus
claimed to be this new temple - the place where God lives, reveals himself, and
forgives sins. Then, in Jesus, his church becomes a new temple built up as a place
for the Spirit to dwell with Jesus being the chief cornerstone.

  • The Cross and the Crown - Oct 8 - Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Psalm 22 starts out famously with the Cry of Dereliction: "My God, my God,
why have you forsaken me," the cry of the crucified Son of God at the moment when he
stands alone in the abyss of hell for the sake of humanity. But it miraculously ends
with a description of all the nations submitting to this same Messiah who at the
beginning was forsaken and alone. Throughout Scripture we see this same story told -
God is planning to conquer the world through his messiah, but he is going to do it
through the suffering of self-sacrificial love.

  • Exile and Christian Suffering - Oct 1 - Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Suffering forces us to question everything - what does suffering mean,
what's causing it, and what's its purpose? The reality of Psalm 88, though, is that
while these questions frequently go unanswered, God - in his son Jesus - walks
    through suffering with us.

  • The Covenant with David - Sep 24 - Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost
Psalm 132 describes the covenant that God made with David in 2 Samuel 7.
But tied up with this promise is the condition that God himself will move into
Jerusalem and make it his eternal home. But a short 80 years after God promises this
to David the kingdom has been split up, and 400 years afterward the kingdom has been
completely destroyed and God's temple has been burnt down. But in Jesus - David's
son and God's son - the second person of the Trinity comes to live on earth and
reign on the throne of his father and his Father.

  • David the King - Sep 17 - Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Although God himself is the king of Israel, they also long for a human
king. So God gives them David. Eventually these two streams - God as king and a
human as king - come together in God's Son and David's son, Jesus of Nazareth.
Because of his kingdom, all our hopes for a human being to rescue us, protect us,
and fulfill us are fulfilled in him.

  • The Conquest of the Gentiles - Sep 10 - Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost
God's plan to redeem the world, established by his covenant with Abraham,
includes the conquest of the Gentiles - the promise that at the name of Jesus every
knee will bow in all of creation. Two examples from the story of the Bible are the
conversion of Rahab of Jericho and the conversion of the centurion at the foot of
the cross. In both cases, the lies of this world's gods were broken through by the
strength through weakness of the one true God in Jesus.

  • The Promised Land - Sep 3 - Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
One part of God's covenant with Abraham was the promise to give his
offspring the promised land of Canaan. For centuries God's people held on to this
promise of a future home in which to live in peace and righteousness with their
Creator God. Jesus fulfills this covenant promise by dying and rising from the dead
to conquer the world for himself and for his people - a world which he will someday
    make completely new.

  • The Mosaic Covenant: God with Us - Aug 27 - Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
God calls Israel to himself in order to make them a kingdom of priests. The
guarantee and goal of this covenant is his presence in their midst, living in the
tabernacle and making his dwelling with them. Ultimately, the tabernacle is a sign
and promise of the future presence of God with his people in the person of Jesus of
Nazareth, the second person of the Trinity.
