St James Lutheran Church: Sermons and Worship episodes

  • Creation - Jun 11 - Second Sunday after Pentecost
As we begin a series of sermons on the story of the Bible, the beginning -
the creation of the world by God - will form the foundation for the whole narrative.
The world belongs to God by virtue of his creating it, and he is determined to make
it beautiful and whole and to live in it with his people forever.

  • The Trinity: God in Community - Jun 4 - The Holy Trinity
The only way to really begin understanding the nature of the Trinity is to
begin reading the story of the Bible to see how the three persons of the Godhead
relate to each other. And from the very beginning, Genesis 1, we can see that the
Trinity's plan to make human beings in their image reveals how both God and man can
be defined in terms of relationship.

expanding by the authority of the Holy Spirit so that the rule and reign of Jesus
grows throughout the whole world, undoing the drought of sin by creating springs of
living water everywhere he goes with his church.

  • Christian Suffering and Our Mental Health - May 21 - Seventh Sunday of Easter
Suffering is inevitable. The key is to know how to handle it. For the
Christian, the results of all suffering - shame, despair, and anxiety - are to be
countered by a renewed focus on the faithfulness and love of God and the community
    of Christ's body.

  • Evangelism in Suffering - May 14 - Sixth Sunday of Easter
In 1 Peter 3:13-22, Peter outlines the ways we can mirror Jesus' saving
acts to the world around us in the midst of our own personal suffering. The ability
to do this comes from the baptismal reality of Jesus' resurrection.

  • The Milk, the Stone, and the Royal Priesthood - May 7 - Fifth Sunday of Easter
The New Testament is full of echoes of important Old Testament texts, but 1
Peter 2:2-10 packs a number of these colorful and evocative allusions into a
particularly dense set of verses. After commanding the reader to long for the pure
spiritual milk, Peter proceeds to describe Jesus as a once discarded stone but now
living cornerstone, and his people as living stones being built up into a new
permanent temple. The Church, like Jesus himself, was once discarded and useless but
has now become an essential part of God's plan to insert himself into his world.

  • The Grace of Christian Suffering - Apr 30 - Fourth Sunday of Easter
Jesus' death does two things: it redeems us from sin and it provides an
example for how we are to suffer for doing good. When Christians follow this path
the world around them gets a chance to see what Jesus really looks like - the God
    who willingly suffers for them.

  • From Futility to Faithfulness - Apr 23 - Third Sunday of Easter
Peter exhorts us as exiles to remember that the blood of Christ on the
cross has delivered us from futile ways. Instead we have a full and hopeful life,
even when we struggle, since Christ rose from the dead. Having been purified by
grace through faith, we are called to a life of purity and love.

  • Facing Troubles with Joy - Apr 16 - Second Sunday of Easter
There are times when we are overwhelmed and wonder how we will move
forward. The disciples felt this way immediately after Jesus' death. However, His
resurrection opened their eyes to see that nothing, not even death, can destroy the
hope Jesus gives. They were able to face the rest of their lives with deep joy, even
through their hardest struggles, and so can we.

  • The Reality of Easter - Apr 9 - The Resurrection of Jesus
The arguments against the historical resurrection of Jesus are
philosophical and theological, not based on historical analysis. In other words,
there are no good historical reasons to disbelieve that Jesus bodily rose from the
dead. But there are philosophical reasons why people would want to reject his
resurrection, namely to avoid the claims of his kingdom. But if we through faith
live in the reality of Easter morning, we will find our lives changed and
transformed into the new creation the first Easter founded.
