Pastor Mindie Moore continues our series called Indispensable: relationships we simply cannot live without. And this theme is perfect for this week, when you and you and you and you and, according to market research, 145 million Americans gave Valentine’s Day cards to people they find indispensable. 

But you know, of all the types of cards that were given this week- to the husband, wife, partner, galentine or friend- you may not find one written for the relationship that we’re exploring today. Because today, we’re going to talk about “the challenger”.

We all need encouragers, but this week we go in the opposite direction, literally. We think about our need for people who are opposite our gifts and traits.

Our scripture story today does not describe a romantic context. It doesn’t even talk about a family relationship or friendship. It is about relationships in a church context, but it brings out this point about the need for differing, and even opposing, relationships in our lives, and the potential for challenge that brings.

The Barnabas in your life is the person who encourages you. The person in your life that helps you connect the dots between what you believe about yourself to the belief God has in you. Listen in as Pastor Jevon talks about the Barnabas in our of our lives.

Today’s sermon is called Double Vision, because this is going to be a year of looking ahead at the big vision peaks toward which we believe God is calling St. Luke’s to scale, while at the same time focusing on the present steps of ministry in front of us.

Today, as we get ready for the presentation of our long range vision next Sunday, we consider one final metaphor for the mission of the church: taking risks.

The good and the bad are accepted. Because what Jesus is describing in this parable is the church. He’s giving us a picture of what the church is meant to be, a place where all are welcome.
