Our actions can become habits.  In our series in 2 Corinthians, this sermon considers Paul’s concern for the Corinthians in their preparedness and the management of giving for others.

When Zacchaeus met Jesus, he became generous. Jesus in his generosity gave all for us. Our giving is part of our participation in the gospel.

This sermon first draws attention to the limited capacity of what we can cope with. Focussing on the part of Paul’s words to the Corinthians about being unequally yoked, it considers what it means to be yoked together and what impact that has on our lives, …  where we are drawn and where we go. We may be drawn away by people, by our interests, habits and attention. A contemporary example is the communication devices that we use. The speaker then reminds us of Jesus’ words, “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light, and you shall find rest unto your soul.”

Continuing our series on 2 Corinthians: Jesus is All we need.  

Following on from the complete reconciliation available in Jesus, Paul explains that despite circumstances of plenty or of lack, he serves God through the grace available in Jesus.  He identifies the weapons on righteousness: purity, knowledge, forbearance,  kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech and the power of God, by which he fights. He seeks that his work may not be in vain.

Resuming our series in 2 Corinthians: "Jesus is All we need", this sermon considers Jesus as our complete reconciler.  Through Jesus and his sacrifice for us, we can be reconciled to God.  Through this grace, we can bring reconciliation to others. It is in our actions that we show our true colours.

2nd in our series on "Hard things to talk about" : Why do bad things happen to good people? This sermon considers the issue of people who suffer, perhaps through no fault of their own.  It also looks at Jesus' response when confronted with similar questions such as some who were killed when making sacrifices at worship. It relates a case from the speaker's own experience.

Ron Irving explains principles of understanding the bible in the light of God’s revelation, beginning with creation, leading to the work of Christ and his sacrifice for the sins of the whole world and for the future.  He considers the place of women in leadership in the bible and the culture of the times, and the place given to women by Jesus, and in the early church.  He then examines the specific passage of 1 Timothy 2: 8-15. He urges us to treat each other with Christian generosity even while holding to our understanding of the scripture.  Finally, he urges us to NOT be ridiculed for unchristian behaviour over such matters.  If we are to be ridiculed, let it be for believing in one who died on a Roman cross;  that he died for our sins; and that through his sacrifice we may have life beyond our earthly existence.

Final in our series in Genesis on "the messed up family of God". Joseph, now governor in Egypt, sees first 10, and later, all 11 of his brothers, come and bow before him seeking grain. Joseph has the opportunity and power to take revenge.  But his heart is moved when Judah offers himself in place of the youngest, Benjamin.  Joseph reconciles with his brothers. In God’s plan, we too can be reconciled to God, because generations later, the Lion of Judah, Jesus Christ, dies on the cross for us.

Eighth in our series in Genesis on "the messed up family of God". Joseph experiences multiple setbacks and difficulties: he was sold into slavery, he was accused of sexual impropriety, he was thrown into gaol; he was forgotten by the royal cup bearer; yet at each stage, God was with Joseph.

Favouritism brings jealousy and hatred for Joseph from his brothers. His dreams make it even worse. His brothers take and sell Joseph into Egypt for 20 shekels of silver, and deceive their father causing severe grief.

Hate rules us, but Jesus’ love brings a better way.
