In this continuation of his study on the Shepherd of Hermas, Fr. Matthias Shehad explores the early Christian writing’s apocalyptic visions and their spiritual meanings. He explains the symbolic vision of a tower representing the Church, built by angels with stones symbolizing different classes of believers, including apostles, martyrs, and faithful followers. Fr. Matthias discusses how the tower’s foundation on water alludes to baptism and how the varying quality of stones reflects believers’ deeds, repentance, and spiritual condition.
He also describes the virtues personified by seven women surrounding the tower—faith, continence, simplicity, knowledge, innocence, reverence, and love—which are essential for inclusion in the Church. Fr. Matthias emphasizes the call to repentance, unity among believers, care for the poor, and adherence to divine teachings as necessary for salvation. He clarifies the non-canonical nature of the Shepherd of Hermas while highlighting its value for spiritual edification and warns against division and spiritual complacency.#ShepherdOfHermas #EarlyChurchWritings #ChristianApocalyptic #SpiritualVirtues #ChurchUnity #FrMatthiasShehad #StPaulHouston #Coptic #FrMatthias
