Star Wars 7x7: A Daily Bite-Sized Dose of Star Wars Joy

There's a certain feeling in the relationship between "the kid" and Clint Eastwood in the movie Unforgiven, Jon Kasdan says, that he and his father Larry Kasdan were interested in when they were writing Solo: A Star Wars Story. The source of that info, an interview in Entertainment Weekly, can be misread as being about Clint Eastwood and his son, but it's actually about Eastwood and a wanna-be murderer who calls himself the Schofield Kid. How does this bear on the relationship between Tobias Beckett and Han Solo? That's what we're looking at today. Punch it!

Han as The Dude from The Big Lebowski, and Chewie as Walter Sobchak? It may not be as far-fetched as it seems. In an interview for Entertainment Weekly, Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jon Kasdan said, "Larry [Kasdan] and I are both huge Coen brothers fans, and we talk a lot about [the relationship between The Dude and Walter] as a reference." On today's episode, we'll talk about the relationship between The Dude and Walter, and how we might see shades of that appearing in Solo.

Larry and Jon Kasdan have cited a number of movies which they used as inspiration while writing Solo: A Star Wars Story. Today, we're looking at "Heat," the crime drama written and directed by Michael Mann. We'll talk about the specifics that the Kasdans referenced about "Heat," and how they could apply to Solo. Punch it!

At the Solo: A Star Wars Story world premiere in Los Angeles, Jon Favreau revealed that the Star Wars live action series coming to Disney's streaming service in 2019 will be set seven years after Return of the Jedi, or 11 ABY. He also revealed a couple other things, too, and we're going to analyze it all on today's podcast. Punch it!

Solo: A Star Wars Story had its world premiere last night in Los Angeles, and with that we begin our "Safe Week" period - actually, two weeks, considering Solo doesn't come out until the 25th. But that doesn't mean we don't have things to talk about regarding Solo - what the embargo date suggests, what the final runtime is, and much more. Punch it!

The most light-hearted of the four tales in the Canto Bight short story collection that was part of the Journey to The Last Jedi, "The Ride" also ties in many of the characters we met in the three other stories - and turns one man's ideas about luck, probabilities, and possibilities on their heads. Punch it!

The Last Jedi Visual Dictionary by Pablo Hidalgo has a few spreads dedicated to Canto Bight. In the case of "Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing" by Rae Carson, we have a story that involves more of the characters introduced in the TLJ Visual Dictionary than any other we've talked about so far. And this story from the "Canto Bight" collection may have ended exactly during the fathier chase scene from the movie. Punch it!

The galaxy's best sommelier, a bar owner with debts to pay, a pair of sisters who may or may not be from another dimension entirely, and an indentured desk clerk all play roles in creating a legend around a rare vintage of wine, and in creating "a certain amount of confusion about our pleasures," as one sister puts it. It's "The Wine in Dreams," part of our look into the goings on at Canto Bight this week. Punch it!

The swank nightclub-like scenes from Solo: A Star Wars Story, or the outdoor scenes of Beckett telling Han Solo how Beckett's putting together a crew - any chance those are happening on Cantonica? Just a pet theory of mine, and as such, I'm taking a closer look at the planet and its famous casino, Canto Bight, in this week's series of podcasts. Today we start with "Rules of the Game" by Saladin Ahmed. Punch it!
