Star Wars Chit-Chat (Formerly Comics In Canon)

THE CRIMSON REIGN IS OVER AS THE HIDDEN EMPIRE EMERGES! For ep 121, Mike delves into the first issue in the final chapter of the Qi’ra trilogy, including the crossover comics too! Qi’ra activates the Fermata Cage against Palpatine and speaks with him directly all while her agents cause chaos for the empire. Meanwhile, Aphra fights the Spark Eternal for control of her body, Sana Starros makes a deal with a Tagge and the Bounty Hunters crew fight the Empire, unknowingly going against their former crewmate; Beilert Valance!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in February 2023.

Hidden Empire 1 was released November 16th 2022, was written by Charles Soule, with Steven Cummings as penciller, Victor Olazaba as inker and Guru eFX as colour artist. The trade paperback of all 5 Hidden Empire issues is due for release July 4th 2023. Doctor Aphra 27 was released December 28th 2022 and was written by Alyssa Wong with artist Minkyu Jung and colour artist Rachelle Rosenberg. Bounty Hunters 29 was released December 14th 2022 and was written by Ethan Sacks with Paolo Villanelli as artist and Arif Prianto as colour artist.

The comic episodes between Crimson Reign & Hidden Empire are 114 for Bounty Hunters, 115 for Star Wars, 117 for Doctor Aphra, 119 for Darth Vader, and Crimson Reign 5 was tackled in ep 110. Episode 109 of SWCIC has more information on The Knights of Ren!

Last week, in ep 120, Mike delved into the one-shot special by Marc Guggenheim which stretches across all ongoing runs of Star Wars comics (excluding The High Republic) to give an idea of what new threat is looming during & after the Hidden Empire crossover event. PATHFINDERS EXPLORE NEW SYSTEMS & RUN INTO MONSTERS IN PHASE 2 OF THE HIGH REPUBLIC! DARTH VADER’S PATH IS UNCLEAR AS HE SAVES PADMÉ’S LOOKALIKE & HANDMAIDEN; SABÉ! For ep 119, Mike delves into 6 issues of Greg Pak’s Darth Vader run, set after Crimson Reign, where Vader & Sabé pursue an imperial governor working with Crimson Dawn and along the way Vader meets two people from his childhood on Tatooine. Palpatine also meets & tests Sabé and when the other handmaidens hear what Sabé has been up to, Dormé is sent to investigate! Mike also provides information on handmaidens and the Iakaru species!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in January 2023.

Darth Vader’s 2020 issues 24-29 were written by Greg Pak. With artwork done by Marco Castiello on issue 24, Raffaele Ienco on 25-28 and Luke Ross on 29. Carlos Lopez is the colour artist for issues 24-28 with Federico Blee on issue 29. Issue 24 of DV 2020 was released June 29th 2022, issue 29 was released November 30th 2022 and the trade paperback collection for issues 23-27 was released January 10th 2023 while the TPB for issues 28-32 is due to be released on June 27th 2023.

In ep 118, Mike delved into the latest of Cavan Scott’s horror comics; Tales From The Rancor Pit, where 3 horror stories from across the Star Wars galaxy are recounted to the gangster Jabba The Hutt! One features haunted droids during the Clone Wars, the second features monster hunter Ty Yorrick during the High Republic era and the last features Han Solo, Leia & Chewbacca dealing with local creatures on Hoth, set shortly before the Empire attack! Mike also gives information on Hassarians, Cereans, Wampas, LEP droids and more!

A HASSARIAN BEGS JABBA FOR HIS LIFE BY TELLING 3 SPOOKY STORIES! For ep 118, Mike delves into the latest of Cavan Scott’s horror comics; Tales From The Rancor Pit, where 3 horror stories from across the Star Wars galaxy are recounted to the gangster Jabba The Hutt! One features haunted droids during the Clone Wars, the second features monster hunter Ty Yorrick during the High Republic era and the last features Han Solo, Leia & Chewbacca dealing with local creatures on Hoth, set shortly before the Empire attack! Mike also gives information on Hassarians, Cereans, Wampas, LEP droids and more!

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in January 2023.

Tales From The Rancor Pit was released in full on November 23rd 2022 and was written by Cavan Scott. Nick Brokenshire did the artwork & colouring for the framing story, which is set between Empire Strikes Back & Return Of The Jedi. Ghosts Of The Machine’s artwork & colours were done by Juan Samu, with the story set during the Clone Wars (22-19BBY), Undead or Alive is set during the High Republic Era (before Light Of The Jedi) and has artwork by Andy Duggan with colours by Roman Stevens, and In The Lair of The Dragon Slug is set just before Empire Strikes ack (3ABY) and has art by Rafael Pérez and colours by DJ Chavis.

Mike tackled Cavan Scott’s 3 other anthology horror comics; Tales of Vader’s Castle, in episodes 76, 103 & 112 of SWCIC. Mike tackled the Mace Windu mini-series in episode 16 of SWCIC and the Ty Yorrick mini-series The Monster Of Temple Peak was in episode 87.

Mike spoke with Cavan Scott in April 2022 which can be found on this very feed or on YouTube, which has their conversation with video!

In ep 117, Mike delved into the 5 issues of Doctor Aphra set after Crimson Reign, featuring the Spark Eternal possessing Aphra, trapping her inside her own memories with no one to speak with aside from a long-dead Chadra-Fan. Meanwhile, Sana Starros puts a crew together to find Aphra while Just Lucky is hotly in pursuit! As well as this plot, Mike provides further information on Cortosis, the Mairan species, the Droid Crush and more!

Path Of Deceit is a young-adult novel written by Tessa Gratton & Justina Ireland, is set in Phase 2, Wave 1 of THR; 350 years before the Skywalker Saga and was released October 4th 2022.

A YOUNG OBI-WAN MUST FEND FOR HIMSELF ON A STRANGE NEW WORLD! In this ep, Mike embarks on a book review for Padawan by Kiersten White; a novel centred around a young Obi-Wan Kenobi shortly after being taken on as a padawan by Qui-Gon Jinn. Obi-Wan travels to a new world, after being guided by a Jedi from the High Republic, he meets a group of children who seem to have strange force abilities, but there is more than meets the eye, as this mystery unravels around Obi-Wan all while he questions where his place is in the galaxy.

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in December 2022.

As per all of Mike’s book reviews, it starts with his spoiler-free thoughts, then he gives plenty of warning before delving into his spoiler-filled thoughts, giving an overview of the book’s plot, some connections to other content and more! Make sure you go back and listen to episode 28 of SWCIC (from October 2020) to hear Mike’s review of Claudia Gray’s Master & Apprentice and Mike’s review of Mike Chen’s Brotherhood in June 2021.

This story is set in 41BBY, when Obi-Wan is 16 years old, approximately 1 year before Master & Apprentice, and 9 years before The Phantom Menace.

Previously, in ep 115, Mike delved into the 4 issues of Star Wars set after Crimson Reign, but before the Hidden Empire crossover event (excluding SW 25), where some Crimson Dawn undercover agents discover the DS-2 and work out where to go next, all while Luke continues to grow his strength as a Jedi and an auction takes place to obtain some ancient High Republic technology. Star Wars 26-29 are written by Charles Soule, with Rachelle Rosenberg as colour artist on all issues, Andrés Genolet as artist on issues 26, 27 & 28 and Ramon Rosanas as artist on issue 29. Issue 26 was released August 17th 2022, issue 29 was released November 2nd 2022 and the trade paperback collection is due out on May 16th 2023.
