This ep is another spoiler-free book review from the High Republic era, with the final book in the second wave (of the first phase); Out Of The Shadows by Justina Ireland – the young adult novel which is set shortly after The Rising Storm & Race to Crashpoint Tower, with a bunch of new and familiar characters from Into The Dark, A Test Of Courage and more!

In more detail, Mike confirms OOTS sits in the timeline and what other SW content Justina Ireland has released, before providing his fully spoiler-free review of the book. Mike then reads the blurb & crawl of the book and gives his thoughts on the themes & characters which features some very minor spoilers, including some interesting lore on Hyperspace. After providing these thoughts, Mike finishes his review by providing more-detailed thoughts on the book and confirms the general plot (including the ending) of the book.

Out Of The Shadows is the young adult novel of the second wave of the High Republic’s first phase along with the “adult” novel The Rising Storm (reviewed in November 2021) and the junior novel Race To Crashpoint Tower (reviewed in February 2022), all set in 231BBY. Wave 3 (due early 2022) will include Claudia Gray’s “adult” novel The Fallen Star plus junior-novel Mission To Disaster by Justina Ireland and Daniel José Older’s young-adult novel Midnight Horizon.

The High Republic Adventures 6 was released 21st July 2021, issue 8 was released 1st September 2021, the 2021 Annual was released 15th December 2021 and the trade paperback collection was released 22nd February 2022.

This episode was first released on the feed of Comics In Motion, in March 2022.

Daniel José Older is the writer of these comics, with Rebecca Nalty as the colour artist for issues 6-8, Harvey Tolibao as artist on issues 6 & 7, Pow Rodrix also helped with the art on issue 6 and Toni Bruno was artist for issue 8. The 2021 HRA Annual has 5 short stories each written by a different author; Charles Soule, Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Daniel José Older & Cavan Scott, with artwork by Sam Beck, Jason Loo, Megan Huang, Yael Nathan, Jesse Lonergan & Stefano Simeone.

POE SEARCHES FOR A SPY IN THE RESISTANCE! In ep 89, Poe’s story continues with volume 2 of his own comics where he & C-3PO search for a droid operative with the location of Supreme Leader Snoke, all while trying to work out who’s feeding information to the First Order. This story also includes Terex’ flashbacks to the Battle Of Jakku and a familiar droid for any readers of the Aftermath trilogy returns! Volume 2 of Poe Dameron is set around 32ABY (2 years before The Force Awakens, 28 years after Return Of The Jedi).

The remainder of their conversation primarily focusss on Kevin’s Star Wars book: Force Collector, including how Kevin’s love of history impacted the writing of this novel, how he got to write it, what elements he had to change (due to Rise of Skywalker), why it may not have sold as well as other books, and other related topics! ANOTHER INTERVIEW FROM THE ARCHIVES! This week Mike will be releasing a new interview with a High Republic author, so in the run-up to that release, he is re-releasing his previous Star Wars interviews and the second is from November 2021, with Paolo Villanelli (originally released on the feed of Mike's other podcast; Genuine Chit-Chat)!

Paolo Villanelli is the Italian comic book artist responsible for drawing many of our favourite characters within the Bounty Hunters comics, Lando: Double Or Nothing and more!

In more detail, Paolo talks about how he got into the career of drawing comic books before talking about what it’s like being one, including timescales, his relationship to the comic writers, colour artists and editors, how much freedom Paolo gets when illustrating including panelling & layout and how drawing ongoing series is easier than one-off issues or mini-series. Paolo also talks about working digitally, how variant covers are commissioned and what he would love to draw & what he hates drawing. The conversation ends with Paolo talking about what he enjoys aside from drawing and some advice to up & coming comic artists!

IT’S THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF RETURN OF THE JEDI, AND A BATCH OF NEW COMICS GIVE NEW STORIES! For ep 128, Mike delves into the first 3 comics that tie-in with Return Of The Jedi; Jabba’s Palace, Ewoks & Lando! Jabba’s Palace shows a conspiracy where someone tries to take over from Jabba, Ewoks features 3 stories without dialogue that Ewoks tell each other around the campfire while in Lando, he & Chewie attempt to find full schematics of Jabba’s Palace, so they can plan a break-in to save Han! There will be 5 more comics released across the year, which Mike will delve into later in 2023.

Jabba’s Palace 1 was released on March 29th 2023 and was written by Marc Guggenheim, with Alessandro Miracolo as artist and Dee Cunniffe as colour artist. Ewoks was released April 12th 2023, was written by Alyssa Wong and had multiple artists; Lee Garbett, Java Tartaglia, Paulina Ganucheau, Kyle Hotz, Rachelle Rosenberg & Casper Wijngaard. Lando was released May 3rd 2023, was written by Stephanie Phillips, with Alvaro López as artist and Antonio Fabela as colour artist. Each of this comics, plus the remaining 5 to be released over the year, will be released in a trade paperback collection in November 2023, titled Scoundrels, Rebels & The Empire.
