Staffy, which has created an online marketplace that connects businesses with skilled workers in the hospitality industry, is shifting its focus from hospitality to a range of other industries during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak.

By working with these other industries, Staffy hopes its platform can continue to support a broader group of skilled workers in addition to the hospitality workers it currently serves.

“We cut our teeth in hospitality so we know that line cooks, servers, and dishwashers are some of the hardest working and most flexible workers out there,” says Staffy CEO Peter Faist.

Following on from the 2020 budget announcement and the news that the UK would be offering Coronavirus business grants, chancellor Rishi Sunak also released plans for an employment and wage subsidy package for UK businesses.

Announced at the same time as nationwide closure of pubs, cinemas and restaurants – impacting 1.4m UK workers according to the Guardian – the plan to offer wage support to businesses is an unprecedented move.

Though this may be a relief to many, it was still not considered a strong enough move by some.

Alongside opposition from other members of government, others have also raised concerns that the subsidy package may not extend to – or support – freelancers and low-paid workers, or those not entitled to Statutory Sick Pay.

Since then, 18-person Diligent Robotics has worked with hundreds of nurses to learn about exactly what they need from an autonomous assistant.

Hospitals pay an upfront fee to buy Moxi robots, and then there’s a monthly fee for the software, services, and maintenance.

Diligent Robotics will be competing with companies like Aethon’s TUG bot for pulling laundry and pharmacy carts.
