Lassina Zerbo is the new Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). In New York to observe the International Day Against International Test, Zerbo provided an update on the instrument’s current status, the International Monitoring System (IMS) and the new Group of Eminent Persons (GEM).

Lassina Zerbo, the new head of the organization which oversees implementation of the treaty (CTBTO), talks to UN Radio's Donn Bobb about the challenges and progress made so far.

Marking the observance of the International Day against Nuclear Tests, the United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Angela Kane, said today (05 September) the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) "should be brought into force without further delay." Angela Kane said moratoria on testing are "most welcome, but go only so far as has been proven by events early this year in East Asia."

Also speaking at the meeting, the new Head of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Lassina Zerbo said "progress on the CTBT is an indicator of the health of an NPT and international commitment towards nuclear disarmament."

He said it was "hard to imagine any further progress on nuclear disarmament, including a fissile material treaty without the CTBT into force."
