  • Diverging inflation dynamics point at further US dollar appreciation| MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Federal Reserve (Fed) President Jerome Powell said that the Fed may delay its first rate cut due to the lack of progress in cooling inflation following a rapid decline observed by the end of last year. The US yields rose and the dollar gained a further bullish support as the major peers in Europe insisted on the diverging inflation dynamics that would allow them to lower their interest rates regardless of how long the Fed remains on hold.
Elsewhere, the barrel of US crude remains offered on geopolitical news, or the lack thereof, after Iran attacked Israel this weekend but risks remain tilted to the upside, while gold attracts buyers near record despite rising US yields as investors are looking for a safe harbour in the midst of rising geopolitical tensions, hawkish shift from the Fed and uncertainty regarding the upcoming earnings season.

  • Tesla’s efforts to boost profitability may not reverse selloff | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
A stronger-than-expected retail sales data from the US cemented the idea that the US economy remains too strong for the Federal Reserve (Fed) to cut the rates in summer.
Then, China posted a surprisingly stronger-than-expected GDP number this morning, showing that the Chinese economy grew 5.3% in the first quarter, comfortably higher than a 4.8% growth penciled in by analysts. But industrial production missed estimates, house prices continue to fall and consumer spending slowed significantly during March. The CSI 300 slid and Shanghai’s Composite fell almost 1.5%.
A strong Chinese GDP may have not boosted appetite for Chinese stocks, but it sure boosts worries that rising Chinese growth – regardless of where growth comes from – will fuel global inflation and make major central banks think twice about their rate cutting plans. The US 2-year yield is preparing to jump sustainably above the 5% level, the 10-year yield advanced past the 4.60% and the US dollar index extends gains.
In individual stocks, Tesla announced to cut 10% of its global workforce and Apple’s iPhone shipments fell nearly 10% in Q1.

  • Oil softens, base metals jump on geopolitical developments | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Risk appetite is better this Monday morning than it was last Friday when the world was bracing for the Iranian retaliation on Israel. Iran fired more than 300 drones and missiles on Israel on Saturday night, but only a small number reached Israel, limiting damages. Oil is lower but base metals including copper, iron and aluminum surged after the US and the UK decided to impose sanctions on Russian supplies.
In the FX, the US dollar strengthens on the back of a severe deterioration in Federal Reserve (Fed) rate cut expectations following strong jobs and inflation data, and the dollar outlook remains comfortably bullish. But rate cut expectations in Europe remain intact bringing parity back on the table for the EURUSD.
In equities, the S&P500 posted its worst weekly performance since late October 2023. Mixed bank earnings didn’t help improve mood on Friday. This week, earnings season gains momentum with the rest of the US big banks, Netflix and TSM due to announce their Q1 results. The expectation is a 3.8% annual growth in S&P500 companies’ earnings per share in the Q1, while profits for the Magnificent Seven are expected to have risen around 38%.
In cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin halving is expected to happen this week.

  • Trend is gold traders’ best friend | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Jerome Powell reiterated yesterday that the Fed is not in a rush to cut rates but that it will cut sometime this year and that the recent jump in inflation didn’t ‘materially’ change their policy outlook. The latter was enough to send the market higher with joy. Stocks and bonds gained as the US dollar retreated sharply, leaving no room for the ECB doves to enjoy a softer than expected inflation data.
Up next, investors will be watching the weekly jobless claims and job cuts as they wait for Friday’s jobs data.
Elsewhere, gold traded past the $2300 per ounce and crude oil extended gains past the $86.50pb level after OPEC confirmed production cuts.

  • Two or three rate cuts from the Fed? | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Mood was down in Asia today as the strongest earthquake in Taiwan in 25 years led to halted operations in TSM and United Microelectronics.
Elsewhere, Tesla led the EV makers south with disappointing Q1 deliveries while major stock and bond markets in Europe and the US were painted in the red yesterday as rising oil and commodity prices fueled inflation expectations and further strength in the US economic data boosted worries that the Federal Reserve (Fed) may not cut the interest rates as much as wished this year. The market now prices less than three rate cuts from the Fed this year, below the three rate cuts plotted by the Fed members at last month’s FOMC meeting. Jobs data should split hairs between those anticipating three rate cuts and those banking on just two.
The FTSE 100 benefited from rising oil & commodity prices and softer sterling to extend gains past the 8000p psychological mark.

  • Tesla deliveries may have fallen in Q1 | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The new quarter started on a hawkish note. TheS&P500 closed the first trading session of the new quarter in the negative after the ISM data unexpectedly jumped into the expansion zo ne in March, the prices accelerated faster than expected and Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow spiked to 2.8% from 2.3%. US US data suggests that the Federal Reserve (Fed) should be in no rush to cut the interest rates. The odds of a June rate cut fell to – and shortly - below 50% yesterday for the first time this year. As such, the US dollar index kicked off the new quarter on a solid footage, the dollar index soared past the 105 level. The euro, sterling and the yen weakened against the greenback.
Gold advanced to fresh record, crude oil extended gains to near $85pb on rising geopolitical tensions.
US factory orders and JOLTS data, German inflation and EZ final manufacturing PMI data will be on the menu of the day.
In the corporate space, the quarterly deliveries from carmakers will be in focus with Tesla expected to have recorded its first sales decline in years.

  • Oil hits ytd high on encouraging China PMI data | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The week starts very slowly as most Western markets are closed for Easter holiday. The US revealed the latest core PCE print on a Good Friday and the Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Jerome Powell spoke after the data. The figures came in line with expectations, the data saw limited reaction due to the Easter break.
The EURUSD kicks off the week under pressure. The yen bulls are nowhere to be found, but the Nikkei index is sharply sold after the Bank of Japan’s (BoJ) Tankan index fell in the Q1 for the first time in a year, as oil extends gains to the highest ytd level on encouraging Chinese PMI data.
In equities, the first quarter ended last week with the S&P500 recording its best performance since 2019.
In Turkey, municipal elections of Sunday ended in tears for Erdogan-backed AKP leaders in major cities including Istanbul. The USDTRY - which is trading higher in the wake of the latest elections - should continue trending higher at a potentially higher speed as the central bank may put less effort to counter the lira’s depreciation now that the elections are behind.

  • US prints core PCE as most exchanges remain closed for Good Friday | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The US printed a better-than-expected growth of 3.4% and Federal Reserve’s (Fed) Waller said that the recent economic data deserves delaying rate cuts and reducing the number of them, and that he wants to see ‘at least a couple of months of better inflation data’ before easing. But this is not what the majority of Fed members think. They think on the contrary that three rate cuts would be suitable for this year.
As such, yesterday’s better-than-expected GDP pill went down the market’s throat quite smoothly, as Waller’s hawkish remarks were mostly washed away by the soft-landing bets and bets that the Fed will – in all cases – cut rates into summer if it doesn’t want to take the centerstage in the US political turmoil into the November election. In this context, if inflation doesn’t get meaningfully ugly, the rate cut should arrive by June or July.
Today, most exchanges around the developed world will be closed due to Good Friday holiday, but the US will print its latest core PCE figure – which is the Fed’s favourite inflation metric. A hotter-than-expected inflation report could further back the USD bulls, and – maybe - temper the dovish Fed expectations provided that a good growth number is good news as long as inflation remains low. If inflation shows signs of picking up, it suddenly becomes bad news.
