  • Portfolio rebalancing & reflation underway into Q2 | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
European stocks renewed record on Wednesday, the US dollar consolidated gains and the S&P500 stocks got a late-session boost. Yesterday’s price action pointed at a possible end-of-quarter portfolio rebalancing as the session saw the laggards of the quarter like Apple and Tesla gain, and the stars like Microsoft and Nvidia retreat.
Moving forward, extension of stock rally and USD appreciation seem unlikely. One must give. The EURUSD holds ground near the 1.08 level – because the European Central Bank (ECB) looks determined to continue fighting inflation. But a robust GDP and a hot inflation report could break the back of the EURUSD bulls.
In Japan, the sumo fight between the Japanese officials and the yen bears remains intense as the yen bears are testing the Japanese nerves near the 152 level. But a hint of further policy tightening is certainly more effective than costly and barely effective FX threats / intervention.

  • Strong risk appetite boost meme stock trading | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Yesterday was a strong day in terms of meme trading and speculation; Donald Trump’s Truth Social flew with its own wings for the first time yesterday and rose up to 60% under the ticker DJT before settling 16% higher at the end of the session, Reddit also saw some nice intraday volatility.
Appetite for meme stocks and cryptocurrencies is back and that’s an important gauge for overall risk appetite. If all goes well, the S&P500 is set to print a fifth consecutive monthly gain – a thing that has not happened since 2013. The major risks to the rally is a renewed pullback of Federal Reserve (Fed) cut expectations and/or a possible deterioration in earnings expectations.
Elsewhere, US crude is under pressure this morning as the API report printed a surprise 9.3-mio increase in US oil inventories last week. Cocoa futures hit $10’000 per metric tone while Apple remained offered on slump in Chinese iPhone sales.
In the FX, the dollar index pushes higher due to mounting edginess before Friday’s core PCE print, the USDJPY is testing the Japanese officials’ limits near the 152 level, as the EURUSD is softer before Spanish inflation and Eurozone sentiment data.

  • Soft monetary policy outlook to boost commodity appetite | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Nikkei index is mostly flat on Tuesday and the yen consolidates above 151 following yesterday’s threat from a Japanese official about a potential intervention to stop excessive bleeding in the yen.
The dollar index gave back field yesterday and the S&P500 consolidated near ATH. Super Micro Computer jumped 7%, while Apple is offered near $170 per share despite chatter that the company could team up with the Chinese Baidu – the Chinese equivalent of Google that’s also active in AI, in hope to boost its iPhone sales in China.
Zooming out, a period of loosening policies will likely support the equity valuations beyond the Big Tech, back bond valuations, but also commodities. Rebound in Western manufacturing, Chinese stimulus and geopolitical risks should back copper, aluminum, gold and oil.
And if commodities perform well, the British FTSE 100 –heavy in energy and mining stocks – should also see a boost.

  • Yen rebounds on intervention threat | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Last week’s BoJ meeting and the market reaction to the meeting was a complete disappointment for the yen bulls. Finally, authorities had to step in this Monday and warn against speculative moves. The yen is stronger this morning, the Nikkei is down by nearly 1%. The FX warnings could limit the seller’s appetite, but will unlikely bring the yen bulls back.
Elsewhere, the equity futures are in the red and the dollar index is weaker this Monday morning. But dollar bears are unsure that the Fed will cut rates in June with such strong economy and bumpy inflation. This week, the US will reveal its latest GDP update for the Q4 and the US economy is expected to have grown more than 3% in the final quarter of last year.
US equity markets remain on a euphoric mode on the back of soft Fed and robust data. The European stocks are also on a positive track. Last week’s Reddit and Galderma IPOs went smoothly. And Trump’s Truth Social will become a publicly traded company by as early as this week as DWAY shareholders approved the merger.

  • Surprise! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The Swiss cut the interest rate by 25bp to 1.5% yesterday, in a surprise move and became the first major central bank to cut rates. The move raised the expectation that the others will join ‘soon’. The Bank of England (BoE) also saw two BoE hawks abandoning their hike vote. Swiss and sterling fell against a broadly stronger US dollar following strong US data, but European and US stock indices traded at ATH levels.
Reddit made a strong debut on the NYSE, the shares opened 38% higher, rose as much as 60% and settled at +48% at the end of the first day of trading. Bitcoin managed to hold ground near the $60K this week, gold retreated after hitting a fresh ATH posterior to the Fed decision, while US crude failed to extend gains above the $83.70 and is back below the $81pb this morning on weaker US gasoline demand and hope of a ceasefire in Gaza, although the Israeli government said that they will ultimately invade Rafah no matter what the US says.

  • Up, up and away! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The Federal Reserve (Fed) left interest rates unchanged as planned, but Chair Jerome Powell repeated that the rate cuts will begin ‘sometime this year’ and that it would be appropriate to slow the pace of QT ‘fairly soon’. The decision was such a relief for the market; US bonds rallied, the dollar fell and the S&P500 traded at fresh record.
In Europe, mood was much less cheery, as the 11% plunge of Kering, the owner of Gucci, raised questions regarding the health of the rest of the European luxury stocks. European Central Bank (ECB) head Christine Lagarde didn’t enchant Europeans when she said that the ECB can’t commit to rate cuts beyond a first cut in June.
Today, it’s the Bank of England (BoE) and Swiss National Bank’s (SNB)turn to announce decision. Both are expected to stay pat, investors will hunt for hint regarding the timing of the first rate cut.
Even more exciting, Reddit will start trading on NYSE today after having raised $748 million priced at $34 per share – which is the top marketed range. The weather conditions are ideal for a first day facing the public – especially for speculative trades.

  • All eyes on the Fed! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Yesterday’s Bank of Japan (BoJ) decision to exit the negative rates went quite smoothly for equities and bonds, relatively disquieting for the yen. The USDJPY spiked past 151.50 this morning while the EURJPY hit a fresh high despite the dovish vibes from the European Central Bank (ECB) and a hawkish move from the BoJ.
In the US, the Federal Reserve (Fed) will most probably keep the rates unchanged today, update its dot plot and maybe give a hint on whether they will start slowing QT.
The EURUSD is testing the 100-DMA to the downside before the Fed decision, while Cable is preparing to return to the December-to-March down trending channel following a softer-than-expected inflation report released just this morning in the UK. Strong US dollar and rising US yields pressure gold prices to the downside, while US crude extended gains extended gains past the $83.50pb yesterday after the latest API data showed that the US oil inventories continued to drop on the week to March 15th. The S&P500 flirts with ATH levels, Nvidia remains upbeat, risk appetite remains strong as Reddit prepares to go public.

  • Shocker! Yen weakens after BoJ hike! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The Bank of Japan (BoJ) scrapped its negative rate policy, raised the rates from -0.10% to 0%, ditched its YCC policy and ended the purchases of ETF and Japanese real estate investment trusts. However, the bank said that it will continue to purchase sovereign bonds with ‘broadly the same amount’ and that the policy will remain accommodative for now. The latter caught traders attention more than the rest. The yields fell and the yen weakened.
Elsewhere, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) maintained rates unchanged at today’s policy meeting, as expected, and the AUDUSD fell sharply below the 200-DMA. The dollar index, on the other hand, extended gains above the 50-DMA and jumped above the downtrending channel top of February and March. The hawkish Federal Reserve (Fed) expectations sent the US 2-year yield to 4.75% in the run up to this week’s Fed meeting.
While the yields and the dollar were rising, the S&P500 was also rising, led by technology stocks.
Elsewhere, US crude rallied past the $82pb on Monday on news that Ukraine continued its attacks on Russian refineries.
