  • Moment of truth for Nvidia | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Nvidia hasn’t said anything yet, and the market is already making big swings – to give you an idea on the potential of a positive or a negative move when the results finally arrive. According to options positioning we could see a 10% move to the upside or to the downside. Mixed earnings and – God Forbid – an earnings miss has potential to send Nvidia’s stock price tumbling, while an earnings beat could fail to gather enough positive momentum – if the beat is not enough strong.
Zooming out, Nvidia’s 4% drop yesterday sent an early warning to the market. The S&P500 retreated 0.6% and settled below the 5000 at the close, while Nasdaq fell nearly 0.80%. It almost feels like Nvidia earnings could be a decisive moment in the AI rally as many expect the AI bubble to burst at some point.
Besides Nvidia, the Federal Reserve (Fed) will release its latest meeting minutes in the middle of confused expectations. We can feel the winds changing direction as not only that the first Fed cut expectation has been pushed back to June – with some 80% chance attached to it – but some start saying that the next move from the Fed could even me a rate hike!

  • Don’t buy anything just because US stocks are expensive! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The Chinese returned from their Lunar New Year holiday having traveled and spent more this year than before the pandemic. The early trading hours were cheery, but enthusiasm left its place to doom and gloom quickly as the Chinese equities found it hard to extend gains. Equities in Europe however extended gains to a fresh ytd high, and the Stoxx 600 index continues to trade at a spitting distance from an ATH even though France lowered its growth forecast for 2024 to 1%. US will be back today with retailer earnings. Nvidia will go to the earnings confessional tomorrow after the bell.
In the FX, the fear that a delay in Federal Reserve (Fed) rate cut translates into a stronger dollar. The dollar index saw support near its 100-DMA yesterday and the EURUSD failed to clear its own 100-DMA to the upside. The latest Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) meeting minutes revealed that the policymakers considered to hold rates steady or a case for a 25 bp hike. And the latest FOMC minutes due Wednesday will give more clarity on if and how the Fed members reacted to last year’s skyrocketing rate cut expectations. From what they publicly say, they think that the expectations went well ahead of themselves. There will hardly be a rate cut announced from a major central bank before June.
Elsewhere, nat gas futures continue their race to the bottom as crude oil tests important Fibonacci resistance to the upside.

  • Is the dragon finally waking up? | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The week starts with the soothing news that the Chinese traveled and spent more than they did in the same period of 2019. As such, the Chinese stock markets return from the CNY break on a cheery note; the CSI 300 index in the positive, after the S&P500 and Nasdaq closed the session in the red after Friday’s hotter-than-expected inflation report.
The US and Canada are off today but the week will gather pace with big US retail and Nvidia earnings from Tuesday! Investors believe that the Nvidia earnings could act as a make-or-break moment for the technology rally, as the S&P500 hovers around deeply overbought market conditions as a result of an impressive AI-boosted rally (and dovish Fed expectations that are also coming tumbling down!)
Interestingly, despite last week’s inflation disappointment and tumbling Fed cut expectations, the US dollar index’s failure to gather positive momentum is weighing on the bullish sentiment this morning, the index is testing the 100-DMA to the downside. The EURUSD tests its own 100-DMA resistance to the upside, as the USDJPY trades near 150 at the start of the week.

  • Global stocks neat ATH as major economies enter recession| MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The S&P500 rebounded past the 5000 yesterday. This time, a mixed set of manufacturing data and a drop in US retail sales – which fell the most in almost a year – were brought forward as soothing factors regarding the dovish Federal Reserve (Fed) expectations. The S&P500 rebounded past 5000, stocks in Europe and Japan trade near ATH levels despite slowing economies and recession chatter.
Investors will watch the US PPI update before the closing bell, but I wonder if it matters, anymore.
The US dollar index retreated to 100-DMA and sees support at this level. The EURUSD tested its own 100-DMA resistance to the upside and sees resistance at this level. The USDJPY bulls sit timidly above the 150 level, knowing that this is probably a peak, or close to a peak before the Japanese do something to reverse the selloff. Crude oil bulls drill above the thick 200-DMA offers, gold is back above the $2000 per ounce, but the positive pressure in the US yields will likely weigh on the yellow metal appetite and prevent the gold diggers from aiming for new highs as the Fed doves retreat, and Bitcoin is doing just fine. Nine Bitcoin ETFs that have been trading since early January have already amassed $10bn of inflows. And it’s just the beginning.

  • Roses are red, violets are blue, you may not reach 2% this year too. | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The market has been very quick in swallowing and digesting this Tuesday’s less than ideal inflation data from the US. Yields and the USD retreated, stocks rebounded. Tech led the rally.
But the rate cut expectations are being scaled back in the US, and a further appreciation in the US dollar could also get the other central bank doves on their knees. This is certainly why the EURUSD has a limited potential at the current levels. Elsewhere, the USDJPY struggles to find sellers after the news that Japan entered recession in Q4 – and they still have negative rates. The Japs are now out threatening that they will intervene if the selloff got worst. So be careful.
In energy, prices are not yet threatening inflation. The barrel of US crude fell sharply, after trading above the 200-DMA, as the latest EIA data printed an 8.5-mio barrel increase in oil inventories last week. Nat gas futures continue to dive as well, driven by soft demand, record high production, ample supplies, and mild winter both in Europe and the US.

  • Unideal US inflation leaves traders with a broken heart | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Yesterday’s inflation data from the US didn’t go smoothly down the market’s throat. Instead, the stronger-than-expected set of inflation data dashed hopes of seeing the Federal Reserve (Fed) cut rates anytime in the first half of this year.
Honestly, one can tell you if June or July would be a better time for the Fed to start cutting. The data will decide when the time comes. Yet the incoming data shows a surprising strength in the US economy. Atlanta Fed’s GDP estimate, for example, prints a 3.4% growth for the Q1 – far from a number that would push the Fed to start cutting rates. As such, the ‘blip’ in yesterday’s disinflation is more understandable than not given how strongly the US consumers spend.
As a result, US yields jumped, equities sold off, the US dollar rallied against its major peers and gold slipped below $2000 per ounce.
And the dollar’s strength was further backed by softer-than-expected inflation data in the UK and Switzerland.

  • All eyes on US inflation! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The week started on a positive note on this side of the Atlantic Ocean, and on a mixed note on the American side. Federal Reserve’s (Fed) Michelle Bowman said that the rates are in a good place to keep pressure on inflation and that there is no need to ease rates soon. Likewise, Richmond Fed’s Thomas Barkin said that they are ‘closing in on inflation’ but that they ‘are not there just yet’.
This being said, the New York Fed’s latest inflation survey came with a good surprise: the 3-year inflation expectations fell to the lowest level on record, to 2.35%. And inflation in the US is expected to ease below 3% in January. Data in line with the expectations, or ideally softer than the expectations, could further fuel the equity rally.
Elsewhere, American crude consolidates gains above $77pb and is preparing to test the 200-DMA to the upside. Trend and momentum indicators are supportive of a move above this level. Aramco says it sees robust global oil demand this year, OPEC and IEA will release their own predictions today and Thursday respectively. But the higher the oil, the higher the risk of inflation. The higher the risk of inflation, the lower the rate cut prospects & the higher the slowdown odds. So China’d better succeed with its stimulus plan to keep oil bulls envious into the $80pb level.
