  • Rate cut expectations get a hair cut. | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Investors continue to come back to their senses and the latter involves trimming the interest rate cut expectations that went ahead of themselves over the past few months. Yesterday, the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) Beige Book survey suggested that resilient consumer spending during the holiday season helped propel the US economy, and another solid rise in the US retail sales confirmed that spending in the US didn’t slow by the end of last year. The probability of a March cut fell to around 60% from around 80% at the start of the year,
The market and the central bankers have started to move toward each other, even though the time gap between when investors price in the first cuts and when central bankers contemplate rate reductions should continue narrowing to find an optimal balance and that should involve a deeper downside correction in stock and bonds, and a further recovery in the US dollar.
The euro gives back field, sterling is cautiously bid following surprise jump in UK inflation last month while the Aussie falls of the bed on soft China, soft domestic data and strong dollar.
In energy, crude oil is better bid and the barrel of American crude is testing the $73pb – again this morning on the Red Sea tensions and on OPEC forecast that global oil demand will grow by a robust 1.8 mio barrels per day next year, exceed growth in supplies and keep the market in deficit. Solid floor is seen at $70bp.

  • Unexpected rebound in UK inflation reverses GBP sell-off | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Yesterday was just another day where another policymaker pushed back on the exaggerated rate cut expectations. Federal Reserve’s (Fed) Christopher Waller said he sees ‘no reason to move as quicky or cut as rapidly as in the past’, and as is suggested by the market pricing. So that was it. Another enlightening moment went down the market’s throat in the form of a selloff in both equities and bonds and a rebound in the US dollar.
Many bankers and influential figures are wining, dining and speaking in the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, which doesn’t only offer snowy and a beautiful scenery this January, but it also serves as a platform to many policymakers to bring the market back to reason. Expect more comments of this hawkish kind during this week. It turns out that one of the most popular topics of this year’s WEF is rising inflationary risks due to the heating tensions in the Red Sea which disrupt the global trade roads and explode the shipping costs.
In the market, the EURUSD slipped into the bearish consolidation zone, the GBPUSD rebounded after a stronger-than-expected inflation report weakened the Bank of England (BoE) doves’ hands. The USDJPY is preparing to test the 148 level, while crude oil remains under pressure despite Red Sea tensions.

  • Calling a spade a spade. | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The chances are that the first quarter of this year will be marked by the realization that it’s too early for the central banks to cut the interest rates unless something really bad – like another bank crisis, or a real estate crisis, or another debt crisis hits the fan.
The divergence between the reason and market pricing suggests that the rate cut expectations will be gently delayed and pricing will be revisited.
If that’s the case, stock and bond markets should correct to the downside, and the US dollar should recover.
The US dollar kicked off this week on a positive note, as the EURUSD made a swift move to the downside following ECB Holzmann’s warning that the threats from looming inflation will likely prevent the ECB from lowering the rates this year.
The EURUSD has potential to fall further. Cable could return below 1.25, and the USDJPY could make an attempt on the 100-DMA – near 147.40.

  • Big US banks expect their net interest income to fall from peak | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The US stock markets ended last week on a cautiously positive note. Friday’s producer price inflation came as a certain relief to inflation worries as the latest data showed an unexpected contraction in the monthly figure. The jump in oil prices, following the US and UK airstrikes in areas in Yemen controlled by the Houthis, which sent the barrel of American crude to past the $75pb level, didn’t last long. The barrel of US crude starts the week below the $73pb level, risks are tilted to the upside as conflict news continues to flow in this Monday.
Rising tensions in the Red Sea and the rising shipping costs are a boon for shipping companies like AP Moeller-Maersk that see their stock prices being pushed higher. Bank stocks on the other hand traded mixed on Friday. Despite a mixed set ofQ4 results and record NII, the big banks share the same forecast for next year: their net interest income will fall next year as the Federal Reserve (Fed) is expected to cut interest rates.
The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) held its policy rate steady this Monday – defying the expectation of a 10bp cut - while pumping more cash into the financial system to reverse the selloff and boost asset prices, and eventually growth. The Chinese CSI 300 index barely reacted to the news. Taiwan’s stock exchange, on the other hand, which diverged positively from the mainland stocks last year, had a cheery start to the week after the ruling DPP’s Lai – who is pointed at as a ‘separatist’ by Beijing - won presidency and his party lost its legislative majority.

  • US earnings season kicks off with big bank results | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Optimism is on the menu ahead of today’s much-awaited US inflation report, and positive vibes will likely continue if today’s US inflation report comes in sufficiently soft. A consensus of analyst estimates on Bloomberg hints that US headline inflation may have gently increased from 3.1% to 3.2% in December, while core inflation has certainly eased from 4% to 3.8% - the slowest pace since May 2021. Data in line, or ideally softer than expected, will keep the Federal Reserve (Fed) doves in charge of the market and could further boost appetite in stocks and bonds – although the spectacular bond issuance at the start of the year will – at some point – draw attention to over-supply and exploding debt levels.
Anyway, in the short run, the US dollar is softer across the board this morning. The EURUSD could find a suitable reason to surpass the 1.10 mark, with weak potential to extend gains above this level.
The USDJPY rallied past the 145 level as a former Bank of Japan (BoJ) board member said that the BoJ is completely ready to exit the negative rates but that the normalization won’t be like the aggressive ones that we saw in the rest of the developed world; it will likely be very slow instead.
Elsewhere, investors will have a look on big US bank earnings, gains in crude oil remained limited and Bitcoin gave limited enthusiasm to the approval of spot ETF news.

  • Hard to agree on whether the US bonds become too expensive or not… | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The World Bank said yesterday that it expects growth to fall to 2.2% for the period that includes 2020 and 2024 and that’s the slowest 5-year period since 1990-1994. The slowing global growth expectations somehow keep the global yields subdued, but at 4% yield, the US 10-year bond is expensive and may not have much upside potential left unless fresh data points at softening activity, and ideally a further weakness in consumer prices.
The S&P500 and Nasdaq consolidate a touch below the December high – and both very close to their ATH. The uncertainty and the lack of clear direction will likely be on the menu until the US inflation report is released tomorrow.
In the FX, the dollar index is better bid before tomorrow’s US inflation report, the AUDUSD is softer after the data showed that Australia’s inflation fell to 4.30%, crude oil rebounded 2% and Bitcoin gave back a part of gains as SEC said that its X post about the approval of spot Bitcoin ETF was fake.

  • Slippery optimism | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The US equities followed up on the European stock market gains on Monday; technology stocks gained the most and their precious contribution to the S&P500 pushed the latter up by more than 1.40% yesterday, as Nasdaq 100 rallied past 2%. US politicians’ agreement on a 2024 spending bill, Chinese authorities’ announcement of further stimulus measures and sliding oi prices helped boosting optimism.
Investors are holding their breath before Thursday’s inflation report which could give a reason to the doves to remain in charge of the market, or not…
