The EURUSD looks irresistible to topsellers near 1.10 | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
German bonds fell yesterday on news of yet another suspension of the debt limit. The 10-year German yield advanced to 2.60%, Italy’s 10-year yield jumped to 4.40%, the Italian – German yield spread rebounded this week from the lowest levels since September, and the widening yield spread between core and periphery could become a limiting factor for euro appetite at a time traders should decide whether the EURUSD should appreciate above the 1.10 psychological mark.
In the US, despite warnings that the falling US long-term yields will, at some point, trigger a hawkish reaction from the Fed and eventually reverse, the Fed doves remain in charge of the market. The US dollar index struggles to gain traction above the 200-DMA. The USDJPY remains offered near the 50-DMA after the Japanese inflation advanced to a 3-month high in October (rose to 3.3% level from 3% printed a month earlier). Normally, it would’ve boosted bets of Bank of Japan (BoJ) normalization, but the BoJ should first awaken from its coma.
In energy, US crude trades near $75/76 region. Downside risks prevail due to speculation that the delayed OPEC meeting could result in Saudi Arabia not doubling its solo production cuts. There is even a slim possibility that they eventually reverse them.
Not much worried, equities on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean extend gains with increased appetite for technology stocks.

  • Delayed OPEC meeting fuels speculation that Saudi could reverse supply cuts! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
OPEC decided to delay this weekend’s meeting to next week because talks between Saudi and African members apparently ran into trouble. The barrel of American crude on speculation that the Saudi may reverse its supply cut, instead of doubling it, at a time global slowdown worries outweigh supply cut efforts.
In the FX, the US dollar index rebounded yesterday on the back of some data points that cooled down the Fed doves’ enthusiasm – one of them being higher inflation expectations for next year. But disinflation will be on the menu of this year.
In all cases, Thanksgiving is one of the calmest trading days of the year. Expect thin trading volumes and higher volatility.

  • Will Nvidia report another stellar quarter? | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The US bonds extended their rally after a relatively strong US 20-year bond auction. Stocks rallied. Microsoft and Nvidia hit a fresh record.
Today, expect the Federal Reserve (Fed) minutes to be much less exciting for bond traders. The Fed minutes will come as a reminder that the falling long-term yields were a major reason why the Fed decided to keep rates steady at the latest meeting. Tanking yields mean that the Fed must stay alert.
In individual new, Nvidia is due to release earnings after today’s closing bell. The company will attempt to beat its own prediction of $16bn sales in the Q3, up from $13.50bn a quarter earlier and around $10bn more than the Q3 of last year. Expectation that Nvidia will beat its own projection is… high.
Elsewhere, HP, Lowe’s and Best Buy will also expected to report earnings today and their sales are expected to have slowed due to weaker consumer and corporate spending.

  • On the menu: US bond auction, Fed minutes, Nvidia earnings and OPEC decision | MarketTalk: What’s up today? |
A slower-than-anticipated inflation rate in the US, coupled with politicians averting a government shutdown extended the US stocks and bond rally last week.
US stock optimism extends globally, with the European Stoxx testing the 200-DMA resistance and the Japanese Nikkei reaching a 33-year high. Japan's supportive central bank, a cheap yen, and strong company earnings contribute to investor interest.
This week, attention shifts to the US 20-year bond auction, the Federal Reserve (Fed) minutes and Nvidia earnings.
In energy, US crude recovers as speculation that OPEC could extend production cuts throws a floor under the recent selloff. The next OPEC meeting is scheduled for November 26th and Saudi considers doubling its 1mbpd supply cut. It’s a risky move and it could go both ways.

  • Even Saudi can’t save the bulls as focus shifts to weaker outlook | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
This week could hardly be better in terms of economic, political, and geopolitical news. The US inflation slowed more than expected, the US politicians inked a short-term deal to avert a shutdown. On top, the US retail sales fell last month, but fell less than expected, the initial jobless claims rose, and the US unemployment benefits reached the highest level in almost two years, factory production fell more than expected and homebuilder sentiment fell to the lowest level for the year.
US yields continued to fall, the major stock indices consolidated gains, but small stocks and Chinese stocks sold off. The Biden-Xi summit couldn’t calm investors’ nerves, and Alibaba announced that it won’t spin off its cloud unit due to the chip war. Ouch.
In the FX, the US dollar remains under pressure, gold extends gains as crude oil tanks on global slow down worries. Unfortunately for the bulls, Saudi could hardly come to their rescue as the market focus remains heavily on the weakening demand outlook.

  • Is shorting Nvidia a good idea? | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Yesterday was about digesting Tuesday’s softer-than-expected US CPI data, feeling relieved that the US Senate passed a stopgap spending bill to avert a government shutdown and welcoming a softer-than-expected producer price inflation, and a softer-than-expected decline in US retail sales – which came to support the idea that, yes, the US economy is probably slowing but it is slowing slowly, while inflation is easing at a satisfactory pace.
The S&P500 jumped more than 10% since end of October, the rate-sensitive Nasdaq 100 is now flirting with the highest levels since summer while the Russell 2000 index rallied almost 12% in 3 weeks, pulled out the 50-DMA, the major 38.2% Fibonacci retracement and consolidated gains in the medium-term bullish consolidation zone yesterday.
As equities move higher and inflation slows, the anxiety regarding short positions mount – hence short covering is adding to the positive pressure.
The Big Short’s Micheal Burry reportedly exited his short position against SPDR’s P&P500 and Invesco’s QQQ and began betting against semiconductor stocks, including Nvidia!

  • Inflation fever breaks and we are loving it! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The Federal Reserve (Fed) doves got a big energy boost yesterday by a slightly lower-than-expected inflation report. The US stocks and bonds rallied, and the US dollar took a severe hit. Good news came from Britain this morning, as well. Inflation in the UK fell more than penciled in by analysts.
All in all, there is growing evidence that the major central banks’ efforts are bearing fruit.
Moving forward, yesterday’s rush to open fresh long US Treasury positions was likely intensified by a hurry to cover short positions. We shall see a correction in the US yields, as the Fed members still maintain their position for ‘higher for longer’ interest rates.
Today, investors will watch the US retail sales data. A strong figure could pour cold water on heated Fed cut bets.
On the individual front, Home Depot shares rallied more than 5% yesterday. Earnings and revenue narrowed, and the company released a cautious year-end guidance, but the results were better than expected. Target is due to report today, and Walmart on Thursday.
Finally, to add another layer of complexity – on top of the economic data and corporate earnings – the US political scene will impact bond pricing in the next few days. The US politicians try to avoid a government shutdown by Friday, but political risks are hanging in the air.
