  • Don’t expect Powell to call the end of tightening! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The US dollar was bid on Tuesday thanks to a rapid selloff in the Japanese yen, after the Bank of Japan (BoJ) announced mini policy loosening steps that didn’t find buyers.
Besides the yen-led boost, the US dollar gained on strong quarterly employment figures. The ADP and JOLTS data are due today, the official jobs data is due Friday.
But before that, the Fed will decide. It will not hike the rates but it will hardly announce the end of its fight against inflation. Be prepared for a hawkish accompanying statement.
Elsewhere, China is not doing brilliant and this week’s economic data in China showed that the Chinese factory sector slipped back into contraction and the Eurozone economies announced gloomy GDP updates, as well. But at least, inflation slowed. The EURUSD fell below 50-DMA.
US crude slipped below its 100-DMA yesterday as buyers became rare on news that Israel’s ground offensive is not as violent as expected. The S&P500 rose on the last day of October but recorded its longest monthly slide since the pandemic.

  • US Treasury’s bond issuance calendar matters as much as the Fed decision! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The Bank of Japan (BoJ) kept interest rates unchanged, redefined the 1% limit on the 10-year JGBP yield as a loose ‘upper bound’ and scrapped its promise to keep that level intact. Alas, the move was less aggressive than expected by the market and sent the yen tumbling.
But the spike in the 10-year JGB yield to almost 1% should’ve pulled the pair lower – especially after the news that the US Treasury will be borrowing less money in the last three months of this year.
The US Treasury Department said yesterday that they are planning to borrow around $776 billion in the final quarter of the year – huge but below the expectation of around $800bn and below the $1 trillion that they borrowed in the July-to-September period.
The Federal Reserve (Fed) starts its two-day policy meeting today, and is expected to keep rates unchanged. In the absence of a surprise rate decision, or a surprise forward guidance about a rate decision, what will really, really matter this week for the US sovereign space and the faith of the US yields, is the US debt situation, and the Treasury Department’s quarterly announcement on details regarding the size and the maturity of the bonds that they will issue to borrow that extra $776 bn this quarter. The composition of the US Treasury’s bond issuances will be crucial.

  • Big Oil, Big Money. | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
We continue to see high volatility in the US sovereign papers near important psychological levels where investors are invited to decide what to do next.
A higher yield curve is not necessarily good news for the broader economy and stock valuations– unless the economy resists to higher rates.
The S&P500 extended losses below the 200-DMA yesterday and the index now approaches an important technical support, the 4180 level, the major 38.2% Fibonacci retracement on last year’s rally, and which should distinguish between the actual positive trend and a medium-term bearish reversal. Nasdaq 100, on the other hand, eked out a 0.30% gain yesterday in the run up to Microsoft and Alphabet earnings due after the bell today. Amazon is due to report on Thursday.
In the energy space, Chevron announced yesterday that it will buy Hess for $53 billion, or for $60bn including debt. Earlier this month, Exxon Mobil had announced to buy Pioneer Natural Resources for around $60bn to extend its Permian footprint. Oil retreated but upside risks prevail.

  • Gold, oil retreat on less-than-feared weekend tensions, upside risks prevail | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Risk sentiment is improved compared to Friday as tensions in the Middle East didn’t escalate as much as feared during the weekend.
The market has been reacting to the news mainly by seeking safety in gold. Gold spiked to $1997 per ounce on Friday on fears that tensions would further escalate in the Middle East. Upside risks prevail but that as soon as tensions in the Middle East stabilize, gold will come under a decent selling pressure as the US 10-year yield flirts with the 5% level, as the US 30-year paper now yields above 5%. The opportunity cost of holding the non-interest bearing gold has significantly increased since the start of the war in Gaza as the negative correlation between the US yields and gold clearly broke, and turned positive.
Elsewhere, the US dollar index has been stagnating since its October 3rd peak. The EURUSD tested the 1.06 offers last week, despite weakening European Central Bank (ECB) expectations. The barrel of US crude traded past the $91pb level on Friday but smashed back below the $88pb this morning as tensions in the Middle East remained softer than what investors feared into the weekend. But upside risks prevail. The S&P500 closed last week more than 2.5% lower and below its 200-DMA on the back of limited risk appetite due to geopolitical tensions. Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Intel, Exxon Mobil and Chevron are among companies that will report earnings throughout this week.

  • US bonds on sale!! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
‘Additional evidence of persistently above-trend growth, or that tightness in the labour market is no longer easing, could put further progress on inflation at risk and could warrant further tightening of the monetary policy’ said the Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Jerome Powell at the Economic Club of New York yesterday.
Along with a softer than expected US jobless claims report, the US 10-year yield jumped to 5% for the first time since 2007. The US dollar is surprisingly calm this week, the price of an ounce exceeded $1980 this morning, and the purchases should accelerate before the closing bell as investors will seek safety into a weekend that could bring more carnage in the Middle East and cude oil is above the $90pb level and has more to rise due to fear of supply disruptions in the Middle East. The dollar-yen is uncomfortably stable near the 150 psychological mark, as inflation in Japan came in higher-than-expected but fell to a year low, softening the Bank of Japan (BoJ) hawks’ hands.

  • Netflix up, Tesla down, S&P500 pressures with US 10-year yield near 5% | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Netflix surprised by a decent rise in subscriber numbers of nearly 9 mio in Q3. The company also announced that it will be raising prices in the US, UK, and France. The combo of more subscribers who will pay a higher monthly fee is a dream come true for investors, who sent the stock price nearly 13% up in after-hours trading Wednesday. Sentiment on the Tesla deck wasn’t as brilliant. Tesla missed both revenue and earnings expectations for Q3 after sales slowed, while the company earned less money by car it sold because it aggressively cut prices to gain market share. ASML announced that its orders slumped the most in Q3 due to a sector-wide slowdown. And Morgan Stanley fell on sluggish results.
Zooming out, expectations for this earnings season are mixed depending on where you get your information from. According to FactSet, the S&P500 companies could eke out a meagre, but a positive 1.3% growth in year-on-year earnings, but Citi’s index of earnings revision posted its fourth straight week of higher downgrades versus upgrades.
The US 10-year yield is now flirting with the 5% psychological mark despite the rising tensions in the Middle East as Biden’s visit to Israel only made things worse after the Gaza hospital blast. A move in the US 10-year yield above the 5% mark will certainly increase the selling pressure in the S&P500 in the middle of the earnings season – regardless of how good or bad the results are.
