Chapter 2.1 of the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith (1689) tells us; “The Lord our God is but ‘one only living and true God; whose subsistence is in and of himself, infinite in being and perfection; whose essence cannot be comprehended by any but himself; “a most pure spirit, invisible, without body, parts, or passions…”This term ‘passions’ does not mean the Lord is emotionless; but rather, that He is unmoved by external forces to change his mind. Today, with the help of Dr. Samuel Renihan, we seek to articulate an often neglected concept, the Doctrine of ‘Divine Impassibility’.

Through the redemption purchased by Christ on the cross, God’s elect are made partakers in his triumph over the grave. Hebrews‬ ‭2‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭(ESV‬‬) - speaking of Christ, the scripture reminds us; “You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.”

Looking to the finished work on the cross, Jesus has accomplished our redemption, all the while, we wait for the culmination of his kingdom, at the end of the age.

In a world full of chaos, it can often feel like a pithy statement, to express that Christ is ruling and reigning. However, simply because we cannot see the end of the story of time, doesn’t mean that things are not being set right as it is ordained to be.
