Helen Huang is one of many Canadian students studying Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and plans to pursue an Internal Medicine residency in Canada. Coming from a small town in British Columbia, she had big dreams to revolutionize the medical field. The 6-year programme in Dublin has provided her a diverse range of opportunities, where she became an advocate of precision medicine and genetic studies. She is currently a researcher in the Epigenetic of Gastro-Intestinal Disease Research Group, where she has worked on bioinformatics projects that focus on genomic patterns underlying inflammatory bowel diseases and cancer. Her avid interest in the cross-sections of AI and healthcare treatment has propelled her to self-teach coding languages and delve into molecular medicine's depths.*
The COVID pandemic changed all interfaces virtually, which did not affect her research. However, the adverse effects of the pandemic while studying abroad left a mark on her mental fortitude. She hopes to raise awareness and resilience for medical students having to complete a patient-focused degree virtually. She is an avid public speaker and is in the making of a platform called “Diaries of an IMG” to eliminate the stigma against international medical students wishing to become a physician in the comforts of their own homes.
In this episode, we discuss Helen’s journey to getting accepted into medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, how to become a more proficient public speaker, the story behind creating STEM Fellowship, conducting research as an undergraduate student, and how to remain resilient. Have fun listening!
