  • DISRUPT YOURSELF: DREAM, DARE, DO — A STELLAR INTERVIEW WHITNEY JOHNSON-#TM031

In this episode, The Mentors host Tom Loarie interviews Thinkers50 top business thinker Whitney Johnson on the power of disruptive innovation and self-disruption. Johnson is renown for co-founding the Disruptive Innovation Fund with Harvard Business School’s Clayton Christensen and authoring two best-sellers—“Disrupt Yourself: Putting the Power of Disruptive Innovation to Work,” and “Dare, Dream, Do: Remarkable Things Happen When You Dare to Dream,” with a third book in production. Listeners to the show (and podcast) will learn how to put the power of disruption to work for themselves. Johnson talks about taking the right risks, playing to your own distinctive strengths, embracing constraint, and being driven by discovery. Johnson and Loarie also discuss how entitlement kills innovation; how we must step down, back or sideways in order to grow; and how important it is to give failure its due. The S-curve—what it is and how it can be applied to business and personal life—and the seven levels one must master to achieve effective disruption and innovative success is explored with remarkable clarity and immediately applicable insight. Don’t forget to share with co-workers and friends!

        • From Engineering to Tacos to Politics: Ric Brutocao Interviews OC Supervisor Bill Campbell – #TM028

Today The Mentors Radio host Ric Brutocao talks with Supervisor Bill Campbell, one of five elected supervisors for the County of Orange, CA. Campbell has served in this role since 2003, and prior to this he served from 1996 to 2002 in the State of California legislature as an Assemblyman for northern Orange County. But he didn’t start in politics! No Way! Campbell segued from engineering, to tacos—yes, tacos—and only then to politics. After graduating from Loyola Marymount with a BS in Electrical Engineering, Campbell continued his education at Harvard Business School in Boston, where he received an MBA. He returned to southern California to work at Rockwell International in engineering where he stayed for about 10 years. Eventually Campbell launched the BIMA Corporation and serves as its president, and over the years has successfully managed 19 Taco Bell restaurants, seven dry cleaners, five Great Earth Vitamin Stores and a food distribution company. Needless to say, Campbell entered the elected office political field with a solid and well-rounded grounding in business, family, and professional work. He also brought with him a strong faith anchor, having attentively imbued his children with the same ethical and faith-driven principles and practical common sense as he and his wife embraced all their lives.  He consciously cultivated the habit of putting people first throughout his professional and personal life, in business decisions, and in choosing to mentor others to succeed as well. • Inspiring Interview with John Phillips on his way back from Help for Houston trip

          John Phillips

A week and a half ago The Mentors Radio Host John Phillips and his wife, Mary, wanted to help Hurricane Harvey flood victims in Houston. Over lunch on Monday they decided to drop everything, load up their 8-foot by 40-foot horse and living trailer with essential supplies like water and diapers and deliver the supplies to a church distribution center in Montgomery, Texas, located just up a small hill from some of the worst-hit Texas regions. From Arizona that is a 17-HOUR trip ONE way.

One of three blowouts – ugg!

          Loading the 40′ trailer

Action time.  They mobilized their local-based employees, set up a GoFundMe page, got the word out, and by early the next morning Associated Crafts & Willet Hauser employees, Costco employees, and local business owners showed up to a Costco parking lot to help load the massive trailer. Even a local TV broadcaster and film crew were there!  Donations poured in.  Pete Leighton from Main Street RV in Mesa, AZ donated more than $1,000 and service to Phillips’ vehicle to ready it for the Texas-bound trip.  Darvin Harmon from Royalty Realty donated $1,000 of new clothes to the effort. Local TV reporter Ryan from local CBS 5 chipped in with some sweat equity, and business owner Dom Sargiotto, president of All American Security Alarms in Gilbert, AZ, donated $3,000 and accompanied John on the journey.  Less than 14 hours later Phillips and Sargiotto were on the road.  They trip took much longer than planned.  Along the way they endured not one, but THREE blowouts, experienced the unexpected kindness of complete strangers, and got a first-hand taste of the devastation, angst and yet hope of those suffering unimaginable loss. In this interview, Salem Media Network’s Life!Line Host Craig Roberts talks with John on his way back home, just after leaving the drop off point in Montgomery. THIS IS WHAT ETHICAL LEADERSHIP LOOKS LIKE! Kudos to John, Mary, Dom and Team!!  Enjoy the short, on-the-road interview…

Gratitude & Hope in Montgomery, TX
