  • Kiah Butschi

    In episode 37, I sit down with the compassionate human that is Kiah Butschi.

    Originally from Switzerland and moving to Australia without speaking English, Kiah has taken a pretty unique path through life. She currently works in support and as a massage therapist, and has also spent years involved in environmental activism, human rights and aid work, including working in a refugee camp. She seems to have always had a strong drive to stand up for people, animals and the environment. We chat about her travels, the experiences that have shaped the way she sees the world, her political views and activism, and her experience during the Black Summer bushfires. It was great to sit down with Kiah and hear about the things that have shaped her outlook and the causes she’s chosen to stand up for.

  • Dr. Pia Winberg

    In Episode 36 I catch up with the Queen of Seaweed, Dr Pia Winberg.

    Originally from Sweden but now living in Australia, Pia is a marine ecologist, entrepreneur and the Founder and CEO of Phyco Health. She’s spent much of her life exploring the relationship between the ocean, science and human health. From her work as a marine ecologist and researcher to developing products using seaweed and marine plants, her career has taken her well beyond the traditional path of a scientist. We chat about her fascination with the ocean, the science behind seaweed and its potential applications, the products she’s created from it, what it takes to turn scientific ideas into real businesses, and the story behind Phyco Health. It was fascinating to hear how Pia has combined her love of the marine environment with science, innovation and entrepreneurship.

  • Moo Dath

    In episode 35, I am joined by the marvellous Moo Dath.

    From being born in Fiji and growing up in New Zealand to now residing in Australia, Moo has lived a life that has taken plenty of unexpected turns. From the wild years of partying and living hard when she was younger, to splitting her time between the snow in Jindabyne and the Gold Coast, becoming a mum to two boys and experiencing the dramatic shift that came with motherhood. We chat about her time in politics as a Greens member for Shoalhaven Council, her involvement in circus, yoga and meditation, and her struggles with alcoholism and mental health. It's a raw and varied story with so many different chapters, and I was grateful to Moo for opening up and sharing the experiences that have helped shape the person she is today.

    In episode 34 I visit the home of musician, Sye Mcritchie.

    Growing up in Sydney, Sye's life has taken him down more than a few interesting paths, but music has always been where he's felt most at home. From a colourful and often difficult upbringing to modelling, acting, song writing, recording and performing, he's spent decades building a life around creativity. We chat about his journey through music, the role surfing has played throughout his life, and the golden era of Bondi in the 90’s & 00’s . We also discuss what eventually led him to leave the chaos behind for a quieter life in Manyana, and how renovating his home has given him the space to refocus on his music and art. Sye has lived a life full of change, and it was great to have a yarn with him and hear the stories that have shaped who he is today.

  • Kurt Nyholm

    In episode 33 I have a beer with the man at the centre of the South Coast of NSW surf community, Kurt Nyholm.

    Growing up on the South Coast, surfing has always been at the centre of Kurt Nyholm's life. From competing as a professional surfer to raising four boys, running two surf retail stores, and giving back to the local surf community, his life has always revolved around the ocean. In this episode, we chat about the highs and lows of life as a travelling surfer, the realities of owning two surf retail stores in an era dominated by online shopping, and his years serving as president of the Ulladulla Boardriders Club, where he helped organise what was believed to be the world's first night tag team surf competition. We also dive into some great stories from his years on the road and what he's learnt over a lifetime in the surf industry.

    In episode 32 I have a coffee with photographer and entrepreneur, Jesse Allen.

    Hailing from Australia, Jesse’s journey has taken him down plenty of different paths. From trying his luck as a professional surfer in his younger years to building a career behind the lens as a photographer, his work eventually led him to living and working in Los Angeles. We chat about the many twists and turns throughout his life and career, and the creation of ViVi Coffee and Ripit Golf Grips, along with his continued involvement in both businesses today. Jesse has built a career by backing his creativity and following opportunities wherever they’ve taken him, and it was great to have a yarn with him and catch up on where he is at with it all today.

  • Billy Barker

    In episode 30 I have a yarn with mountain man, Billy Barker.

    Billy grew up in Western inland Sydney and later moved to the South Coast where he pursued his love for surfing. During this time Billy found himself doing winters in the snow, a path that’s taken him all over the world chasing steep lines and backcountry powder. From being a dish pig at the Hotham pub to becoming the director of ski patrol at Hotham ski resort, Billy also owns and operates a guiding business in the Himalayas and is a backcountry guide in Antarctica, working in some of the most intense mountain environments on earth. Now a Patagonia ambassador, he still spends most of the year in the mountains. It was great to have a yarn with Billy and hear the stories from the incredible life he’s lived and continues to live.

    In episode 29 I catch up with master surfboard craftsman, Kirk Bierke.

    Kirk is a globally recognised surfboard shaper living with his family in Australia.
    Kirk’s journey into surfing started far from the coast, growing up in landlocked Wisconsin before his family pulled up stumps and moved to California. We chat about discovering surfing, how that passion led him into shaping, and his take on board design and how it’s evolved over time. Kirk also shares stories from living in Hawaii, the influence it had on his surfing and shaping, and his move to Australia where he now calls home. We get into the ups and downs along the way, what drives him, and how he’s stayed true to his own path. We also touch on shaping boards for professional big wave surfer and son Russell Bierke who has previously been a guest on the show.

  • Chayne Simpson

    In episode 28 I have a yarn with 2x world champion kneeboarder, Chayne Simpson.

    Chayne has taken the road less travelled, choosing one of the least recognised forms of riding waves, kneeboarding, which has earned him the nickname 'Neal'. We chat about what it’s like going against the grain of the stereotypical surfing path and taking it all the way to multiple world titles. He walks me through his craft as a sign writer and his journey of starting and running his own business, along with his career as a firefighter and some of the intense moments he’s experienced on the job. We also get into family life, marriage, and raising two frothing young boys. Chayne lives a seriously diverse life, juggling multiple trades alongside fatherhood and a deep love for surfing, and I was stoked to catch up and hear what’s been happening in the life of Neal.
