  • Ep. 15: Hiring a Designer, Apple's Batteries. How you can mitigate dumb YouTubers. And Chrome is the New IE?

    Episode Summary:

This time on the show we discuss how Apple screwed themselves while trying to deliver a better customers experience. Then how Logan Paul's trip to Japan's "Suicide Forrest" will impact creators and advertisers and how you can mitigate these problems. Chrome is the new Internet Explorer???? We talk about Chrome's dominance causing generalized internet pain. Finally we tell you everything you need to know to successfully hire a kickass designer.

Question of the Show: What is the best audience engagement trick you have heard on a podcast or on YouTube?

    Actionable Nuggets From This Show:
    • Think about what customers are going to think of the solution.
  • Offset your mass buys with tightly edited influencer sponsorships
  • Set levels of support for browsers. Example: if a browser has above 7% market share it gets the full QA for every release.
  • Hiring A designer:
    • Designers are artists, they will be different from your other employees
  • Look at their portfolio and make sure the designers style matches your brand aesthetic
  • Give them a take home assignment during the interview
  • Make sure they can work collaboratively with you.
  • Don’t separate your design team from the rest of the marketing team, bring them into the daily grind.
  • If you can, devote designers to brands.

  • Ep 12: The One Where We Hate on People Then Talk About Turning Haters Around - Brand Shaming, Get Rich Quick People and Making The Most of Bad Customer Situations

This time we discuss #SleepingGiants and other activist movements. These guys are trying to kill sites they don't like by getting brands to pull ads. Unfortunately they are typically complaining about retargeting while padding the stats of the shitty websites.

Then we go in on Tai Lopez. Definitely a smart and successful guy. But definitely in the 'get rich quick' zone. Check out the disclaimer on StillUnsponsored.com. We will save you from the retargeting he runs.

Finally, we discuss how to turn around customers that are really, really mad. Generally if we are talking to the customer, its on social or in person at a trade show, this means they have been holding on to the issue for a while. Or they are upset enough to cause a PR issue.

    Outline:

    0:00 - Intro

    0:30 - #SleepingGiants

    3:20 - Tai Lopez

9:21 - Making the most out of bad customer situations

  • Ep 10: Marketing Attribution Vendor BullS#$t Test and Protecting Individual Privacy in a Big Data World
    Episode Summary:

Data Scientist Elliott Whitling joins us to discuss how marketing attribution vendors probably work behind the scenes. He outlines why you should ask the vendor how the vendor's algorithm learns and why you need to ask about identifying false positives. Then we look at what big data means for your anonymity. Finally, we dive into the differences between data scientists, data engineers and data analysts.

    Marketing Attribution Vendor Buying Guide:
    • How does the algorithm learn? Is the vendor using supervised or unsupervised learning?
  • How does the vendor identify false positives?
  • What is the rate of false positives? Ask for the ROC curve.
  • Understand the data going in, can the vendor technically access that data and will it give them enough to make an accurate model?
  • Show Outline:

    0:00 - Intro / Introductions

1:02 - The data science of marketing attribution vendors

17:36 - Differential Privacy: Protecting privacy in large datasets.

28:40 - Data Scientist vs Data Engineer
