An option is a contract that is given with an aim of making a sale or a purchase to a stock at a price that was initially agreed and by a set date. 

Every contract normally sells 100 shares of the stock. 

Generally, an option permits you to place a bet on the direction that you feel the price of a stock will go.

If an investor wants to buy an asset that seems to be more expensive than the total money that he or she has, the investor can borrow money from a broker and add to the amount in the bank account that enables him to purchase the asset. 

The money in the investor's bank account acts as collateral, while the company which has given the investor the loan, becomes the lender.

Options are derivatives meaning that their prices are based on the prices of their primary securities.
