In this episode of Stop To Think we wrap up our talk about patents and ideas. We talk about ways we could move forward without the current intellectual property system in place. The government, its bureaucracy, and the legal system currently bog down the pace of innovation. A system without them better interfering would be better for society imo. Also, yaay for making to episode 50.
In this episode of Stop To Think we continue talking about copyrights, patents, and copying ideas. Specifically, we get into a discussion about if it's ethical to copy someone and under what conditions it is or isn't.
In this episode of Stop To Think, we continue the discussion from last episode by branching out into a conversation about the US Copyright and Patent system. We talk about the concepts behind it and what it is trying to do.
In this episode of Stop To Think we talk about originality. In general, concepts, ideas, those sorts of things seem to come from discovery or from the recombination of things already discovered. People get bent out of shape when they don't get credit for their ideas. This is fair but at the same time, the ideas they are claiming are likely the result of them discovering something that was already there or recombining stuff that was already discovered anyways.
In this episode of Stop To Think we continue from last episode with our talk about ownership. We talk about how it drives society and how there are two cases of enforcing it. Either a higher power protects your property rights or you have to protect them yourself.
In this episode of Stop To Think we get a bit political to get across a point. Specifically, we talk about how the concept of ownership is one of the primary factors in the Israel/Palestine dispute. Beyond that, we get into a discussion about that whole conflict and how currently the incentives of the negotiating parties are not aligned. One side seems to want peace and the other wants destruction.
In this episode of Stop To Think we finish off our talk about education (for now at least). Specifically, we talk about how one solution (homeschooling) has its own set of drawbacks. That is to say that school teaches people more than just academic subjects. Students also learn how to navigate hierarchies in a lower-risk environment.
In this episode of Stop To Think we talk about how the U.S. needs to take education more seriously. If we don't we run the risk of losing out in the race for the five frontiers that we talked about last episode. We talk about how the U.S. education system is set up and I miss an opportunity to refer to a personal education plan as a PEP. From there we talk about some of the challenges the system is facing.
In this episode of Stop To Think we talk about the five frontiers. AI, Space, Manufacturing, Food Production, and Genetics. The country or the company that masters any one of these domains will gain a decisive advantage over everyone else. We use this discussion as a jump-off point to talk about how the US needs to get it together and start focusing on these areas.
In this episode of Stop To Think we talk about how the world works in its natural state. It's good to think about this from time to time because it puts things in perspective and reminds us to be thankful for how good things are in the modern era.
