In this episode of the Stop To Think podcast we talk about working some exempt overtime. A few episodes ago we talked about incentive structures and how they work with salaried labor. During this episode, we talk about how even though a salaried employee doesn't have an incentive to work overtime there are situations in which they still might want to. For example, if they approach their job as a hobby or if they feel like they can reduce their overall stress by getting some extra work done.
In this episode of Stop To Think we talk about the hard points in life. Those life events that are guaranteed to happen with the only question being a matter of when. These events are almost certainly going to have a major impact on our lives but for the most part, many people live without ever stopping to consider them. This can be good but it can also lead to a large amount of regret.
In this episode of Stop To Think we finish up the series on incentive structures by talking about incentive structures in society at large. Whether we like it or not, our society is shaped by its incentives. If we're not careful about what behavior we incentivize, we'll inevitably create problems for ourselves down the road.
In this episode of Stop To Think we continue our talk about workplace incentives from last episode. We discuss commissions and profit sharing and a few other cool ways that employers can compensate their workers that might be a better fit than just straight salary or straight hourly wages.
In this episode of Stop To Think we continue looking at how incentives motivate people. Specifically, we talk about how incentive structures play a role in the workplace. We talk about hourly and salary wages and how they don't work exactly like most employers expect them to.
In this episode of Stop To Think we finish up our talk about incentive structures in personal relationships. Specifically, we focus on how incentives can be used in a positive manner within personal relationships.
In this episode of Stop To Think we pick up where we left off in the last episode. We talk about exploitative relationships and how bad things can happen in your personal life when your incentives aren't in alignment with the people you have relationships with.
In this episode of Stop To Think we start a series on incentive structures. There's a saying "If you want to get the truth, follow the money." and that's more or less what inspired this series. In this first episode, we talk about how people are generally self-interested. If you keep that in mind, friendships, marriage, and relationships, in general, tend to follow certain kinds of patterns.
In this episode of Stop To Think we talk about whether people are fundamentally good, bad, or neutral. Specifically, I tie this to how it affects your life through your expectations. If you expect people to be good and they're not, you'll be disappointed. If you expect people to be bad and they're good, then you'll be positively surprised. Like usual, the balance is somewhere in between probably but I personally prefer to stick with viewing people as having an evil nature and having to fight to be good.
In this episode of Stop To Think we get into a bit of philosophy. We consider how it's not really possible to live every day like it's your last because the amount of time you have left determines how you live your life. Last day living is different than living with 40 years of life expectancy left. It's best to find a balance.
