When Major Armistead needed a special flag to fly above Fort McHenry during the war of 1812, he called upon one of America's most respected flagmakers, Mary Pickersgill, to see if she would accept the task of sewing the flag.

Mary considered the flag's immense size, told Major Armistead she could do it, and quickly enlisted the help of at least a dozen seamstresses to assist with the project.

You see, this was not a run-of-the-mill flag, but a truly enormous flag that the Major intended to raise above the fort... but only when the time was right.
