Throughout history, human beings have pulled off some pretty outrageous stunts in order to gain recognition.
On November 27, 2000, for example, magician David Blaine had himself encased in a massive block of ice in Times Square. He stayed there for 63 hours, 42 minutes and 15 seconds, before being removed with chainsaws.
Today’s story takes place on the same date, November 27, exactly 190 years earlier in 1810. Her name was Mrs. Tottenham. The attention she received that day was the result of a well-coordinated marketing ploy, as clever as any scheme attempted before or since…
Yet unlike Mr. Blaine, what really sets Mrs. Tottenham apart is the fact that she neither needed, nor asked for, nor even was aware of why the attention was given to her. She just happened to be the unwilling victim of the greatest hoax of all time!
