Episode Description

Self-replicating machines (aka. Von Neumann probes) could be imminent. If we can build them, why haven't we heard from some alien probes by now? Self-replicating machines could ensure humanity's future in space. But how can we ensure they won't grow beyond our control?

Episode Description

Over the years, many science fiction writers have inspired me to dream, look farther, and contemplate life in the cosmos. Today, I hope to do the same for others with their own SF writing. I also have the good fortune to write about science, space, and the exploration thereof for a living! You might say my day-job and side-job are complementary.

Episode Description

The possibility of altering worlds to make them more "Earth-like" has been explored extensively by scientists and science fiction writers alike. But is it feasible, or even desirable? In the end, the best reason to terraform Mars and Venus might be preventing ecological collapse here on Earth.

Episode Description

Could it be that humanity hasn't found evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence because it's too advanced for us to recognize? This is the essence of the Transcension Hypothesis. Based in part on the idea of exponential growth and the "technological singularity", this hypothesis argues that advanced intelligence will eventually "transcend" and become undetectable. Examining human history and the nature of exponential growth, it is possible that extraterrestrials have "transcended" to an entirely new state of existence (and someday, we may too!).

Show Description

Is the reason humanity hasn't heard from extraterrestrials because there's no one out there? This is the central argument of the Hart-Tipler Conjecture.

In short, Hart and Tipler argued that humanity must alone in the Universe, otherwise we would have heard from another civilization by now.

Show Description

In 1964, Russian-Soviet astrophysicist and radio astronomer Nikolai Kardashev wrote a paper where he described how alien civilizations could be categories based on the energy they could harness.

This gave rise to the "Kardashev Scale," which remains an highly-influential concept in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).
