First becoming sick at ten months old and later developing kidney disease from either upper respiratory issues or strep throat, Lutz was left with only experimentation of medication from her health providers because, being raised in the sixties, dialysis wasn’t a thing until the seventies. Growing into a tom-boyish teenager and joining the volleyball team at her high school brought attention to her stroke-level blood pressure, which created more concerns with tests. It wasn’t until about five years ago that Lutz was notified that she may want to begin thinking about transplantation because her kidneys were failing more. She would need to go on dialysis to preserve her health until receiving a kidney. After waiting and having others test to see if they were a match, her youngest daughter was a perfect match and went through with being a living kidney donor. Now recently passing her first kidney transplant anniversary, Brenda joins ARTavius and chats about her journey to transplantation on the eighth episode of the “Stories of Hope podcast.”

After a day of work, Edmondson noticed a sharp pain in his chest that he later discovered was a heart attack. After his wife called 911 and the paramedics arrived, things worsened, causing Edmonson to flatline for about 30 minutes. Struggling to recover from the heart attack, Richard gracefully pulled through and regained consciousness from his wife’s voice. Richard slowly but surely got back as healthy as he could but needed a heart transplant due to the damage from the heart attack. Exactly one year after the heart attack, close to the exact hour, Richard was notified by his doctor that a heart had come available for him.  Now seven years later and doing great with his new heart, Richard joins ARTavius and chats about his journey to transplantation on the seventh episode of the “Stories of Hope podcast.”

Before being diagnosed with kidney disease at four years old, Philip Jones Jr.'s complications stemmed from a post-strep throat illness. From post-strep throat to full-blown seizures, his doctors identified the underlying cause of his now kidney disease diagnosis. As years passed, he began dialysis for a few years and got the call for his kidney transplant at 16. A few years later, as a theater major in college, his life turned upside down from a trip to Arizona with his theater team that began the journey of his kidney rejecting and soon after going back on dialysis. After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 37 years old, Mrs. Sara Beth Silverman was then diagnosed with renal failure 20 years later. Battling with multiple tests and doctor visits, Sara Beth initiated a request to get a pancreas transplant as well. From her extensive knowledge of educating herself about kidney disease and diabetes, she didn't want her diabetes to damage her new kidney after the transplant. After a series of three collapsing incidents within a couple of hours, Joey was notified by a doctor in the emergency room that the small veins that ran to his liver had swollen and burst, which caused him to lose half of the blood within his body. Unknowingly to him, he has been bleeding for about a week. It was such a severe case that he later had to be placed on the national transplant waiting list in need of a liver transplant.
