He was tossed overboard the breaking ship. It was night. The torches from the ship were drowned. The stars and the moon were blocked by storm clouds. The only light to see by was lightning. It was by chance that he surfaced that first time. He struggled to tread and to see anything he might hang on to. Lightning flashed and he saw nothing but waves. They pushed him up and pulled him down. And one of them loomed above him. In vain, he pumped his arms and tried to swim away. The wave descended and swallowed him.
A sailor, tossed overboard during a storm and fated to drown, is rescued by a people who live on the seafloor and who make grand plans for him.

The gods were fallen. It took many generations for humankind to learn of this. Many prophecies and visions. Many failed quests by heroes and explorers who sought to find the truth of those prophecies and visions. It was not known how or when it had happened, and perhaps a few gods still lived, but it was well-known by Damario's time that the gods had fallen.
And they left chaos in their wake, a chaos that followed from the unraveling of everything that the gods—for all their faults—had held together.
The gods are fallen, and without their influence, the mortal world is in chaos, until a hero fulfills a prophecy…

In those days, there was a magician who could cast a spell on a candle and link that candle to the life of a single person. So long as the candle burned, there was hope.
Those families who had the means engaged the magician to cast this spell when husbands and sons went off to battle. So long as the candle burned, their loved one was still alive. The highest winds would not snuff out the flame. But even on a quiet night, if the soldier died, so too would the flame on the candle die. Those families would know of their loss long before word came to them from the battlefield.
So long as the enchanted candle burned, Vesta's husband was still alive. But the flame died and she mourned. Then, one day, the flame reignited.

Finden was a young man who wanted to go out into the world, to travel, find adventure, see spectacular sights, and meet all manner of people (especially lovely girls and heroic men). He worked at his father's shop until he had saved up enough money to take his first trip beyond his province. Perhaps even beyond the borders of the kingdom. He told his father of his plans one day, and he respectfully declined his inheritance. His father accepted this, but he told Finden to wait a year before he set off. For there was another inheritance due to the firstborn upon reaching the nineteenth year.
Finden was insistent on leaving that very month. So his father took him aside and told him the secret of their family's moderate yet certain success. His father showed him a pair of trousers.
Before leaving home to explore the world, Finden receives an odd inheritance, a pocket that produces fresh eggs. Now what could that be about?

Everything went dark. And for just a heartbeat, Frank was strangely soothed by the luxury of pretending he was just sitting in a closet above ground on a muggy day. And then the emergency lights came on and all the instruments were beeping and blaring and the commanding officer was giving orders that Frank could not hear as he took his station and stared at the dials and readings that made no sense.
